My father's both kidney's working only 10%.Doctors told us they need "Dialysis" twice a week for whole life.My father is a Diabetes and High blood pressure patient. Is there any kind of exercise or Yoga which help to make both the kidneys work properly.?

Answers:
Nope.
Diabetes causes BOTH high blood pressure and kidney disease.

He has three choices:
1) Dialysis
2) Kidney Transplant
3) Death

Depending on your fathers age and other health conditions, a transplant may not be possible.

When the kidneys are this far gone, they will not heal. The damage is done.

He DOES, however, have some choice in the dialysis technique. He can have the HEMODIALYSIS 2-3 times a week, or he can have PERITONEAL DIALYSIS daily.

With HEMODIALYSIS, he will have to go to a Dialysis Center to have this work done. If he has had a "fistula" installed (by surgery), then they will hook the machine up to his arm. if not, they will need to locate a vein in his neck or groin. HEMODIALYSIS is very difficult to perform at home. It take two people and a special water supply.

PERITONEAL DIALYSIS requires a small tube be installed into his belly (but not directly into the stomach). a special fluid is pumped into the area around his intestines. After 3-4 hours, the fluid is removed and thrown away. PERITONEAL DIALYSIS can be done at home, by yourself, while you sleep. It can also be done at work, during lunch, but tends to get a little messy.

Due to the nature of Hemodialysis, most patients go on immediate disability. Peritoneal Dialysis patients can often continue working normally.

The more often you do dialysis, the longer you will live. Twice a week is minimum for Hemodialysis; most doctors recommend three days a week. Peritineal Dialysis is done daily, at home.

Therefore, the survival rate is a bit higher for Peritoneal Dialysis patients than for Hemodialysis patients. The prognosis for Hemodialysis is about 5 years. Prognosis for Peritoneal Dialysis is 6 to 7 years.

I myself have only about 14% kidney function, and am waiting for a transplant. i am hoping to get transplanted before I have to take the dialysis.Health Question & Answer

Since only 10% of the kidney is functioning, get your father on dialysis immediately. Your can also consider kidney transplant in the future. Depending on his health status and age, transplant might be a good alternative as it waste a lot of time doing dialysis and a lot of pain from poking the needle. Some of the people prefer to die than to go through this suffering. So important to cheer up your father. Give him hope all the time.

For transplant in Singapore, you have to register him in the transplant list. The doctor can help you with this. But sometime it might takes years. The longer he waits for transplant, the more unsuitable he will become for transplant. A fast alternative is to go oversea for transplant. Popular destinations are India and China. Suitable donor can be found within weeks.

In the meantime, the things that you can help your father is to get him to do moderate amount of exercise, drink less water (controlling the amount of water drank is very important), control his diet strictly, and take all the medicine conscientiously.

Sorry to inform you, but something important for you to know. Kidney failure is irreversible and the dialysis frequency will increase with time. You also need to check with the doctor to confirm on the life span for someone on dialysis. Seem like a stop watch will start ticking for the patient.Health Question & Answer

I wish I can give you an answer that can make you happy. Unfortunately, there is no exercise that can make his kidneys to be better anymore. Since your father's kidneys has reach 10% functionality, he definitely need to go for dialysis as he's kidney unable to remove the waste inside his body. While on dialysis treatment, he's diet need to change, such as low carbo, salt and fat diet, no oily food, less consumption of water per day as water rentention is common for kidney patients and they tend to choke the lungs which make them breathless. Recommended you haemodialysis where it washes the blood compared to water dialysis as this will restrict his movement because u need to perform the treatment every 4-5hrs. As for haemodialysis, the days that he don have treatment, he can still go around and still enjoy the lifestyle that he haveHealth Question & Answer

Dialysis is the best solution at this point.

Changing diet and exercise won't help much, because the wastes need to be excreted and that's only done through dialysis.

Dialysis is GREAT! People can live for years and years on dialysis. It's just a matter of commitment b/c there will be lifestyle changes that need to be made regarding diet, exercise, daily routines, etc.

I've seen patients who've been on dialysis for 20-30 years! Talk your father into it. It's sooo worth it in the end, so that your father will not suffer.Health Question & Answer

Exercise or Yoga can't make the kidneys better, but they can make your father's life-style better.
For now, Dialysis is the only logical option for him. You can ask the doctor to change medication with more "kidney-friendly" for diabetes and high blood pressure drugs ( I think the doctor already done), example: candesartan for High blood pressure.Health Question & Answer

Sorry to hear about your father.
Unfortunately, uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes will increase your risk of kidney failure. Kidney transplant is needed if the kidneys don't function well.
Please make sure he monitors his fluid intake and what types of foods he eats.
Exercise will not reverse kidney damage.Health Question & Answer

Moderate exercises and some Yoga somewhat help your Father in a way it gives him Strength, Relaxations & Proper body Functions. But the best approach is to look for the list of foods ( Either List of fruits, Veggies, oils etc... ) that are Very Good for his case; Then have a Nice Father/Son Bonding in Preparing them...
