Restless leg syndrome affect lower back?!

Question: Restless leg syndrome affect lower back.?
Her legs hurt a lot at night and she can't sleep much anymore. She describes it as a pain in her nerves. I was doing research and it sounded a lot like RLS. However, she says the pain starts in her lower back and goes all the way to her feet. Does RLS reach that far.?

(I'm trying to get her to see a doctor soon).Health Question & Answer

I moderate a Yahoo group called restlesslegsyndrome and your Mum is free to join up (you, too!). I've had it since childhood. RLS typically affects the joints of the legs and arms, but can also affect broad areas of the body. It's not necessarily painful, just a creepy-crawly feeling and the urge to get up and move around.

But this condition that you describe sounds like sciatica (which I've had). For now, have your Mum try sleeping or resting on her side in the fetal position, which is least painful.

A doctor will quickly determine what's up. When I had sciatica, I went to my doctor. She felt parts of my back and had me lift my legs. Ouch! She figured it out right away. Sciatica typically affects the lower back and one leg only. It's due to pinched nerves.

One exercise that is very good - if this is the case with your mother - is for her to lie on the floor on her back and have her knees bent and legs in the air - as if she were sitting straight in a chair on its back on the floor. Have her take ibuprofin for the pain and alternate between heat and ice in her lower back or bum where it hurts.

If it's RLS, she can learn to deal with it through medications. I use 2 mg nightly of clonazepam, because my doctor advised me that Mirapex and Requip (heavily advertised) have too many side effects.

My best to her!
