Do black people have less of a chance of getting skin cancer than caucasians people?!

Question: Do black people have less of a chance of getting skin cancer than caucasians people.?
Well black skin contains more melanin than Caucasian, correct.? Wouldn't the increase of melanin cause them to be less likely to get skin cancer.?

I was asking one of my friends about it and he just pushed it off as me being racist. I really hate it when people can't separate racism and pure curiosity

I consider Caucasians as that listed on this Wikipedia page. I always have and I always will.

Racist.? Your friend is silly.
Dark skinned people do not get skin cancer as frequently as light skinned people, and yes it has to do with melanin. Melanin is the skins natural protection against UV rays. When a light person tans, that is they're skin trying to protect itself from further damage. The more protection you have (melanin) the less chance you have of developing skin cancer... but only if it's NATURALLY there (so getting tan offers no protection against skin cancer).Health Question & Answer

"The risk of melanoma is more than 10 times higher for whites than for African Americans. This is because skin pigment has a protective effect. Whites with red or blond hair or fair skin that freckles or burns easily are at increased risk. Red-haired people have the highest risk"

The issue with blacks since it is rare when it is finally diagnosed the cancer is at a higher stage.Health Question & Answer

Hi sweetheart,

Yes the incidents of caucasians having skin cancer are much higher. In actual fact in my entire nursing career I can honestly say that I have never known of a case where a dark skinned person has been diagnosed with it. (I mean all shades of dark skin not just black.)

I agree with you wholeheartedly, I don't care if someone is black, white, yellow, green, red, or pink. There is only one race and that is the human race. Peel our skins off and we are all identical.

I write for www.after-cancer.com, and what I have discovered is that although people with darker skins (will that appease the PCs.?!!) are less likely to get skin cancer, they can get it.

Often people think that if they have a dark skin this protects them - but all the authorities say no - they must still use sun protection.

If you want to know more about why we developed an obsession with suntan, put Chanel into the search window on the site - and you will see it was all her fault! She started the fad.

Verite RHealth Question & Answer

Yes. People with more menin in their skin have less of a chance of getting skin cancer. They also don't sunburn as easily. Sorry, I don't have a link as an answer, but my dad (who studies cancer) told me about that. Obviously they should still use sunscreen, as they aren't immune, but it does help.

Quite honestly, I think people are too obsessed with being politically correct sometimes. Honestly, racism.? Ugh that pisses me off almost as much as real racism sometimes. :P sorry totally random tangent there.Health Question & Answer
