HELP! Used cold sore home remedy and my whole lip is swollen!?!

Question: HELP! Used cold sore home remedy and my whole lip is swollen!.?
I started developing a cold sore yesterday, and having no money to buy Abreva, I decided to try some home remedies. I have some important events in a couple of days so I REALLY need it gone. I tried ice and it became slightly smaller. I tried toothpaste and salt. And this morning, I cut up some garlic and pressed it to the cold sore. It was stinging like crazy, so I figured it was working. But now, I took the garlic off and my cold sore/upper lip swelled up to the size of a marble!!! What do I do.?.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
leave it alone. Are you allergic to garlic by any chance.? just asking.

When the swelling goes down and you give your lip a rest, try putting a little Listerine on a q-tip and hold it on the coldsore for about 5 min. It won't make the cold sore go away like Denavir or Abreva would, but it will numb it up a bit as well as dry it a bit faster. You can do that about once a hour without damaging the skin tissue around the lip. Sorry that you had a flare so close to an event.
DO be careful and wash your hands every time you touch it. Make sure you have no cuts on your hands when you touch it, herpes can be spread to your other body parts (e.g. hands- herpes whitlow), eyes, etc.
Please just leave it alone for now though.Health Question & Answer

Start by leaving it alone. Ice won't cure it and obviously kitchen foods won't either. You can buy other products for cold sores that are cheaper than Abreva so you best option would be to try one of those. A cold sore is caused by a virus so until that virus so it will go away when it is ready.Health Question & Answer
