Can diabetics donate blood?!

Question: Can diabetics donate blood.?
i'm a type 1 diabetic and i was wondering if i could donate blood. :/Health Question & Answer

Answers:
YES!! any diabetic unless they are taking the animal insulins or have lived in Europe in the past 20 years can donate blood!

The reason they say that diabetics cannot donate is when the only insulin available was animal derivative insulins, it was a possibility that the recipient could be allergic to the animal insulin.

Animal derivative insulins have not been available in the USA for the past about 15 years, so that is not a problem any more.

Do be sure that your glucose is near normal levels before going down to the "leach center" to donate blood.

Do be sure to take a suitable snack for after donating. They use orange juice and that might "shoot the moon" for us.

Mad Cow disease in Europe is still preventing a lot of good people from being able to donate blood to some very worthy and needed causes.

Be healthy, happy and do some good community service! Either donate blood or work at the donation center! or BOTH!Health Question & Answer

I'm pretty sure that they can. Diabetes is causes by an insufficiency of insulin in the blood stream. However, blood vessels don't create insulin, the pancreas does! It doesn't matter if your blood vessels are "empty" of insulin, the recipient can still use your blood vessels to carry insulin. And it's not like your blood is going to be in their body forever. Remember that they are only "borrowing" your blood for when they need it, and then they will make more. Blood cells do not divide, so you wont be passing on the mutation that causes your diabetes (yes you have a mutation)

But ask your doctor/donor person just in case :)Health Question & Answer

Diabetes can donate blood. The donars blood might have high blood sugar whereas the reciever who do not have diabetes can able to produce sufficient amount of insulin and bring down the blood sugar levels. During storage the sugar in the blood gets oxidise and the level comes down. diabetes is not a comminucable Disease.Hence Diabetics can donate blood.Health Question & Answer

In the US, people with diabetes are eligible to donate blood, provided that they are otherwise healthy and have never used bovine insulin.

In Canada, people with diabetes (either type) are not eligible to donate blood.

For other countries, you'll have to check with your doctor or the local Red Cross or other organization which is responsible for collecting blood donations.Health Question & Answer
