Is it safe to take amoxicillan and azithromycin at the same time?!

Question: Is it safe to take amoxicillan and azithromycin at the same time.?
My 2-year-old son was prescribed amoxicillin for a possible sinus infection and was then diagnosed with pertussis the next day and prescribed azithromycin. His pediatrician said he should continue to take both antibiotics because they do different things. When I asked the pharmacist, she agreed they are two different classes of antibiotics but seemed hesitant to agree he should continue to take the amoxicillin. Is it safe to take both or should I discontinue giving him the amoxicillin.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
It is ok, just a little redundant. Have no worry.Health Question & Answer

1. Sinuses are not developed in a 2 year old child.
2. Pertussis is rare now a days due to DTP vaccination.
3.A good doctor doesn't change his diagnosis so readily & frequently.
4. A diagnosis should be based on clinical findings as well as investigation results.

Though both the antibiotics are from a distantly related group, their coverage more or less are the same.
Amoxycillin may produce loose motions while azithromycin may lead to gastritis and vomiting.

Pertussis as such doesn't need any antibiotic.

Better you check with some other doctor for a second opinion meanwhile continue with only one medicine i.e. Azithromycin.
