What does it mean when a doctor says ?!

Question: What does it mean when a doctor says .?
after blood work that your liver came back high. does it mean its bad.? what are the procedures after that.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
No one blood test is 100% accurate. They need to do more than one to be sure of the results they get, as many things like exercise performed to eatting may cause a different result.
Your body chemistry also changes constantly.
also these blood tests are sometimes not
just specific to the liver alone, they may be
made in other organs, also.

This tests only give the doctor an idea if
there is a problem in the liver. They will
do other testing if they determine it is
a definite liver problem.

The tests they do to check the liver and
see if the cells of the liver may be damaged
or if the cells of the biliary area, just under the
liver, may be damaged are known as the
Liver Enzymes. (These are the ALT, AST,
GGT, and Alk Phos)

The tests they do to see how well the cells
of the liver are functioning to do the job they
normally do to keep the body healthy are
known as the Liver Function Tests.
(These are the Bilirubin, INR, and Albumin)

There is also another test they do, to see
if the cause of the liver problem may be
caused by a virus, known as the
Hepatitis Viral Testing for Hepatitis A,B,C,etc.

If the enzymes are just mildly high, it may be
nothing...they may return to the normal range..
however, the higher they go...the more they
can signify a liver problem. The "functions"
tests depend on which ones are high or low...
to determine what is wrong.

Usually, if it is a liver problem, it starts out
as the immune system responding to any
liver cells damage there. The liver is in a
membrance capsule. When the immune
system responds...it puts more pressure
inside this capsule and causes inflammation.
The liver may enlarge in size and sometimes
the doctor can feel this by placing his hand
on the upper right hand portion of the
abdomen just under the rib cage.

If the cause of the inflammation is found and
eliminated and the inflammation is treated,
the cells of the liver can heal. It is only
when they start to die off that they become a
real concern.

Here are some of the things that cause a
liver problem. If you are able to stop any
of them...cause there are some that
you cannot do anything about...then it may
help.
(1)Alcohol consumption: alcohol is the number
one cause of a liver problem.
(2)Medication toxification: all liver patients are
told not to take any medications not prescribed
or approved by their doctors...medication goes
through the liver first to be broken down before
going to the rest of the body. Some medication
are much harder on the liver than others ones
are also.
(3) Chemical exposure: this can mean chemicals in your home or work that you can
avoid.
(4) Biliary obstruction or malformation: this
isn't something you can do much about unless
the doctor can remove the obstruction.
(5) Hereditary disease where the body
retains iron or copper in excess
(6) Viral infections...like Hep A,B,C,etc.
they can treat you for this
(7) Mushroom poisoning...this may not be
your situation, but people have gone out
and ate mushroom that they picked on their
own
(8) Parasite infections...people can develop
a problem from eatting shell fish or swimming
in or drinking unclean water.
(9) Auto immune disease where the body
turns on its own organs and structures.
(10) Cardiac problems where the blood doesn't
flow well
(11) Fatty liver developing cause of alcohol,
weight, or hereditary conditions.
There are other causes also.

It depends on how high and what type of
tests your doctor has taken on you. We
cannot tell much here unless you post the
test and their results.

To look up any of these tests and see
what they mean, here is a link where you
can place either the abbreviation or the
name of the test and it will tell you so much
more:
http://www.labtestsonline.org.

If the doctor finds out that you have inflammation,
he may start you on medication to reduce it and
talk to you what you can do about it, depending
on the cause. He may order an ultrasound be
done to see if the liver is enlarged because
of the inflammation; if there are any tumors
or growth;, and to see how the blood is
flowing through the biliary area and liver.

I hope this is of help to you. It is hard to
wait to see what the doctors says.
Hope you find the answers to this soon and
be treated.Health Question & Answer
