What is it with diabetes and all these alternatives to real tried tested documented and true medical advice? ?!

Question: What is it with diabetes and all these alternatives to real tried tested documented and true medical advice.? .?
There is so much information in this forum about diets, and supplements, and chamomille tea, and all kinds of other homeopathic diabetes cures. Do people really believe in this hocus pocus medicine.? Why not see an endocrinologist.? Why not take the medication that you are prescribed and then monitor your blood sugar as directed.? Diabetes has such awful complications - why mess around with potential complications.?
I'm just really surprised with the amount of bad and potentially harmful advice here. My son has type 1 diabetes, and I've been to A LOT of classes and support groups and have been involved with JDRF and ADA functions and never ever once have I heard a doctor or educator saying "drink chamomille tea" or anything along those lines as a form of treatment.Health Question & Answer

Because most people think they need to work against authority, instead of accepting the authority of a physician to help. In other words, most people will do ANYTHING other than what they are told.

Another reason is our deep-seated belief in magic. We WANT things to happen "mysteriously", and so accept the "magic potion" cure. Therefore, when an answer seem to come from "the mysterious east", it MUST be good because those people know more about magic than anybody!

Diabetes is one of the best understood disease around. That doesn't mean they know how to cure it, but its causes and effects are well understood. Blood sugar values is one of the best documented features of the human body, as out the effects of BOTH high blood sugar and low blood sugar.

Those people that insist on following something other than what is the best that science has to offer at this time are ignorant, foolish, or both.Health Question & Answer

while you have done well to educate yourself medically, modern western medicine is NOT the be all end all in the care of diabetes, there are other valid treatements out there, many of which actually work BETTER than western medicine. If you think what you have learned thus far is all there is to know, you do yourself a huge disservice. The chamomile tea thing is however wishful thinking, I agree with you on that one.Health Question & Answer

Chamomile tea has been found to have beneficial effects in a scientific study. While that's something that have been publicized recently (I read it a couple weeks ago), chamomile has been known to have multiple health benefits for quite a while. Of course, it is unkown whether or not the effects of chamomile are ENOUGH to do much difference.

However, overall, I agree with you - people generally believe any sort of mumbo jumbo and follow all sort of quack advice, not just with diabetes, but any condition and disease out there.

LOL I see somebody gave me a "thumbs down" - the flip side of the same phenomenon; people are not looking for scientific studies and empirical proof, they just act on some weird "faith" (oh NO! Western medicine is not complete! But chamomile does not work!)Health Question & Answer

Well, for one thing, Type 1 Diabetes is different than Type 2 Diatetes. Type 1 pretty much cannot be helped on its own or "prevented." Many people are born w/ Type 1, or something goes wrong w/ the Pancreas (as one girl I know), then they have Type 1.

Type 2 diabetes is PRIMARILY a dietary/lifestyle "brought-on-by-yourself" type of "disease." People who do not consume a lot of junk (white flours, twinkies, sodas, etc.) DO NOT get Type 2 diabetes. It is a fact, because areas in this world that still do not have access to the "finer foods" (i.e. JUNK) that Americans and "civilized cultures" have available - do not have Type 2 diabetes. For more info on this, read, "The Schwarzbein Principle" by Dr. Diana Schwarzbein. She is an endocrinologist in California who exposes a lot of problems with the way the medical community treats Diabetes (mostly Type 2).

I'm not saying Chamomile tea is a "cure" for Diabetes. I've actually never heard of that one, and I've heard of a lot of them. At any rate, if someone drinks chamomile tea and still drinks their soda and eats their Twinkies and McDonald's, they're still going to have problems, even if it was found that chamomile tea is a help.

It's important to note, as well, that there is NO money in healing people. Doctors are useful, and the medical establishment is useful. However, it has gotten out of hand and has become, predominately, a drug-pushing "business." Have you done any research as to how doctors are "trained" now days.? Most people who are adamant about "official" research do not dig deeper to ask questions such as: How was the researcher trained.? What is his/her background.? How is he/she funded.? (i.e. Where is his/her money coming from for this research).? What do the statistics actually reveal.?

Most people take whatever the newspaper reports about "research" or whatever their doctor says about "research," then feel like they are informed and go on about their business.

In college, I took a Statistics class. It was a really fun class if you like working with numbers. However, it reveals some basic problems with a lot of "official" research. One of our assignments was to take a set of data and use that data to BOTH prove an argument is true and to prove an argument is false. Statistics/numbers can be manipulated in a multitude of ways to reveal whatever "fact" someone is out to make them reveal.

Much of the training doctors receive is in how to prescribe drugs - not what will heal and cure. Drugs (prescriptions) NEVER heal or cure anything. Yes, they have their uses. However, healing and curing are not their uses. Drugs (prescriptions) are meant to deal with "symptom management." What that means is that you may not notice your symptoms, therefore you feel that the problem is "solved." The problem is still there.

Herbs can and do heal, if used properly. They
