Yes it's curable, but you have to go without for a while to get it on track, then you can slowly re-introduce most "forbidden" food in a moderate way.

Firstly to work on nutrition, cutting out everything made from white flour and everything that contains sugar (except for a bit of honey, and of course fruit is healthy). Try to cut out as much wheat as possible too, so if it is available, buy wholemeal rye, rice, barley or spelt products instead. Then try to add a moderate amount of
plain natural unsweetened non-diet yoghurt (Greek is often the best) on a regular basis.

Make sure you eat a lot of vegetables, more so than fruit. For instance instead of a packaged snack, eat hommus dip with carrot sticks, or instead of a glass of fruit juice choose vegetable juice. Eat vegies or salad with every meal that you can, and make sure you eat good protein for instance red meat, chicken, fish (even if it's just canned tuna or sardines), eggs, chickpeas, beans. Try to cut down on starchy foods a bit so that you are eating more vegies and protein per meal (aim for 1/3 protein, 1/3 vegies/salad, 1/3 carbohydrate/starch), this will ease the bowel from having to process large amounts of starch. But of course make sure yu eat enough, you don't want to go hungry, because it's not supposed to be a diet!!

Secondly after nutrition you can do a lot for your body by including some movement in every day. Walking is wonderful for the body, it is the first kind of exercise we ever did after all! When the body moves, the gut is stimulated to work properly, as are the internal organs - liver, kidneys, gall bladder.. all these help digest food and process toxins, leaving less strain on your intestine.

Thirdly you can look into a more specialised therapy like getting some vitamin/mineral supplements, and taking a homeopathic remedy to strengthen your digestive system... it is best to see a qualified naturopath or homeopath for these, as they will work out the correct dosage and balance for your particular body and circumstances.

Even if you only do a few of these things, you will help your symptoms a lot. The biggest 2 things are cutting out white wheat products and sugar; these are nutritionless and only cause blockage and thus IBS symptoms.

Eventually as your gut heals and becomes stronger and more efficient, you will be bale to let yourself eat the "forbidden" foods a little more often, but since you have a weakness in this area (we all have some weakness - others may have respiratory weakness, etc etc), then you will need to keep an eye on this during your life and go easy on the "baddie" foods.

Hope this helps!!Health Question & Answer

I used to suffer terrible with IBS, and do occasionally get flare ups but there is a lot you can do to help.

First off, keep a food diary, and alongside this keep a note of situations you were in. Were they stressful, chaotic, restful etc.

I found I was eating far too much processed food and not enough fibre. A very good start is to introduce almonds into your diet. Just a handful a day are not only rich in antioxidants but help your digestive system get back to normal. If things get to the point you need drugs then buscopan is an amazing anti spasmodic that brings your system back into flux and stops and cramps. These, taken with a fibre drink such as fybogel are very good. Now and then, often after eating something high in fat I get a bad attack and find paracetamol and codeine a good treatment until the buscopan gets things moving naturally.

Make sure you also drink plenty of water. 8 glasses spread throughout the day should help you feel better.Health Question & Answer

IBS is extremely common in people predisposed to stress. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, soda, wheat, dairy like the plague.Health Question & Answer
