Can a recovered alcoholic or drug addict ever drink or use again?!
Question: Can a recovered alcoholic or drug addict ever drink or use again.?
Answers:
Not this alcoholic! I know that complete abstinence for the rest of my life is the only way for me. Otherwise I'll just pick up right where I left off 13 years ago. It wouldn't take me long to get right back in that miserable place of out-of-control drinking. I never want to go back to that place!!
When I think about "the rest of my life" it can be overwhelming. So that is where that corny "one day at a time" comes in. I get through each day as it comes without alcohol.

It would be overgeneralising to try to give everyone who identifies themselves as alcoholics etc a rating that describes them all. There are different types of people living different types of problem.
At this stage of things, I personally subscribe to the idea that abstinence is my best bet. After 25 yrs without a drink I watch how little control I have over chocolate and know how I would likely be with alcohol. Even if I could be trained to drink in a controlled manner, what hard work that would be, I doubt I would keep it up, and you know, alcohol is really not a necessary component in life.
Having said all that. I don't really know for sure; although it might be a very big gamble for me if I chanced it. For me, it would be the sort of experiment that could go terribly wrong.
Many alcoholics in 12 step (AA) recovery programs haven't a hope of drinking again because their program does not address the underlying issues which account for their wilful demise into addiction - and so the problem psyche is always existent. IMO.Health Question & Answer
