There is a considerable body of evidence to suggest that a tendency to addictions of one kind or another may well be genetic in origin.

It would seem reasonable, therefore, to suggest that diseases like alcoholism, do in fact run in families. You would be well advised, with your family history of addiction, never ever to drink at all. You may think that you are always in control, but I'm afraid the chances are that you are not.Health Question & Answer

Research shows genetics is a factor in alcoholism. Children of alcoholics have a 4 times greater risk of being an alcoholic as those whose parents are not alcoholics. Of course, this doesn't mean everyone who has a parent who is an alcoholic will become one too, but the chance of it happening is greater. Just be aware that it may be harder for you to control your drinking once you start, so you may decide it's not worth taking the chance. Good luck.Health Question & Answer

It can run in the family, but each person as an adult controls their own actions. Some choose to follow down the same destructive path and never break the cycle. I come from a family of alcoholics, and I drink some myself, but nothing out of control. Occasionally on weekends or if I am at a party. It will only happen to you if you allow to it. Just remember that if times are hard in your life, find other things to do to cope vs picking up a bottle. :-)Health Question & Answer

alcoholism definitly runs in the family but just because your mom and grandpa were doesn't mean you will be too ....you just have a higher likelyhood of it than someone who doesnt have alcoholism in their family.Health Question & Answer
