My sister has cancer and in the last stages. ?!

Question: My sister has cancer and in the last stages. .?
I applied for Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) at work. But was told that she didn't fall under FMLA guidelines. I take her to doctor appointments at least twice a week. She is on chemo and with that she has to be monitored she is always sick afterward. Can anyone help me out on this. There's got to be something in FMLA guidelines that will allow me to take care of an ailing sibling. She is still my blood relative. What's the purpose of having this law if it doesn't pertain to everyone in your immediate family other than the obvious son, daughter or parents.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I am so sorry that your family is facing this.

Unfortunately, FMLA does not provide for siblings. They are not considered a part of the immediate household under the law, something I learned when I faced the same situation with my sister.

If you've already exhausted your vacation and sick time, find out if your company has a compassionate leave policy. Your HR representative might have some ideas that can help you get the time off you need to deal with the family crisis.

Another thing that I've heard of co-workers doing is donating their vacation time to people in your situation. It is accepted by our company and quite a few others I've heard of.

Good luck and God bless your family.

Health Question & Answer

* For the care of a newborn, newly adopted child or a child placed with the employee for foster care; or* For the care of a child, parent or spouse with a serious health condition; or * For the employee's own serious health condition, which renders him/her unable to perform the functions of his/her job.

The above are what is covered by FMLA. Would your boss give you some time off - a leave of abscence.?
