Do you think i have breast cancer?!

Question: Do you think i have breast cancer.?
Yesterday i was in the shower and i noticed a lump on my right breast, its hard and maybe about 3 cm in perimeter. I had my period so maybe could my breast's just be swollen or what else do you think it could be.?
I told my mom about and she read up a little about it and found some information saying that it could just be because of my period and if doesn't go away after 3 cycles that i should go see a doctor.
Any other opinions on this.?
Thanks, xxxHealth Question & Answer

I see from your Q&A that you've just started high school.

At you age your chances of having breast cancer are just about zero.

It's mainly a disease of ageing - 80% of those diagnosed are over 50, it's rare in women under 40 and almost unheard of in under 25s.

The American Cancer Society and other cancer organisations recommend that women start breast self examination at the age of 20.

Most breast lumps, even in women over 50, are not cancerous.

Your breasts are still growing and developing and what you describe is almost certainly hormonal.

You were very sensible to talk to your mother about this.

Health Question & Answer

You and your mom are approaching this perfectly. I am so happy that you are talking to your mom, and your mom is keeping a cool head about it.

Cysts (water filled "balls) in the breasts are very common in young women and that is probably what it is. They come and go with cycles, and if your cyst does not go down, the worst thing that happens is a special doctor will drain it with a needle. DON'T PANIC! It doesn't hurt very much and it will take the pressure off so the cyst won't hurt any longer. Health Question & Answer

A lot of women find lumps on their breasts that have nothing to do with cancer. I wouldn't worry too much about it, take your mothers advice. If it bothers you to not know, you can go to the doctor whenever you want - if it is breast cancer, you'll be glad you went. Cancer is something you want to get rid of as soon as possible - it can be removed via surgery. Give it some time though, like your mother said, it might just be because of your period.Health Question & Answer

At your age, I would think of fibroadenoma as the first diagnosis. Other diagnoses would be a cyst or fibroadenosis, all of them harmless. But cancer is not so common in young adults, though seen once in a while. Don't wait for the 3 cycles. Consult a doctor, at least for te sake of your peace of mind.Health Question & Answer

If I were you, I would go to the doctor right away. Better to be safe then sorry, cancer isn't something you fool around with.Health Question & Answer
