it depends on what he is having done. i had a heart transplant so they had to cut, not break my chest open. i had very little pain afterward. they wired it back together and i can see the wires when i have a chest x-ray. a lot of heart procedures are done through arteries through a catheter now and are not very invasive. recovery time is minimal also.Health Question & Answer
It depends on the type of surgery. I had 2 open heart surgeries and they made a vertical incision and had to cut through my rib cage. It hurt like the dickens afterwards. The worst part was when they took out the lung drainage tubes. I had to sleep on my back and get really creative in getting in and out of bed. There were also driving restrictions and other restrictions. Health Question & Answer
It all depends on the type of surgery. Im guessing that they will unless he is having a bypass surgery. They have to cut open the skin vertically down the breast bone (sternum) and then crack the sternum open. There are handle like things that hold both parts of the rib cage open.
