Why don't doctors listen?!

Question: Why don't doctors listen.?
My problem is my doctor seems to go deaf when i speak, i have just been diagnosed at the hospital with many ailments that are all linked to a heart problem i didn't know i had, (i knew something was wrong with my heart but not what was wrong), but none of my doctors listen when i ask questions, the main response is you are too young for that problem (i am 38) but oh you do appear to have that problem and we will give you medication, but as you are too young to have this illness come back in 6 months. So you go to your GP who then decides he wont give you the medication until he has a written letter from the consultant, so you again wait for weeks until the letter arrives, only to be told by your GP that you can't possibly feel as bad as your claiming as your symptoms are only mild to moderate, but you know your own body better than anyone, you know how sick you are getting etc, but no one will listen, every which way you turn you are fobbed off with the same line.....you are too young to have this illness, but as far as i am aware sickness is not ageist....i have since found out that babies, children, teenagers etc have all had my illness and have been operated on, but me....i get no operation until they feel i am old enough, because of this illness i have had 3 mild strokes in 1 year, but they still say i'm not sick enough, Why is this.? Why wont doctors listen.? Health Question & Answer

I have written this many times in answers and that women's cardiac health issues are frequently ignored. You do not state what your cardiac problem is. When they say you are too young to have this problem they are essentially saying your a big faker and get out of my office. It's been studied many times and documented that men receive better treatment than women for cardiac health issues. I work in cardiology and have seen it often.. I found I received better treatment from female Dr's. You should keep track of all this very carefully in case something happens to you. Write the Dr who wrote this report and carefully document the symptoms you spoke to him about and quote what he said. Include that he stated he was going to put you on medication, but in his consult failed to do this. also include what your GP said to you when he received his report. Politely ask for clarification. Just keep quot ting what they said. Letters like that scare the **** out of Dr's. Try to be polite and positive, but state what your concerns are but state clearly how this made you feel and that you are concerned and confused by what was said to you. If you do not get a response then change Dr's., and if you do that write them both another letter. Dr's. are always afraid of being sued. Just be care full how you come across in your letter. Take care, Donna One last thing, what does fobbed off mean.? That is not a small problem why hasn't your Dr. referred you to a cardiovascular surgeon for an assessment.? Make no wonder your so frustrated, I would be to. Have you had a recent echocardiogram. Keep a copy of all the diagnostic tests you had. You've had 3 strokes what are they waiting for. Write your letter then right off those 2 Drs. I think the person who responded to your question is a Dr. Just ignore it, some people don't give a **** about anyone and that will never change, all the best, DonnaHealth Question & Answer

I am a Cardiology Nurse, and I have to sympathise with something you said, about some cardiologists who keep using the line, "you're young and female there is no problem" That comment really irritates me, it doesn't exclude pathology. Being young and female does make heart disease less likely, but does not exclude problems, to me that comment is irrelevant.

With regards to the rest of your question, you haven't included details of your medical condition or treatment etc so it is impossible to comment. It maybe the case that at the moment, the risks associated with whatever surgery you think you need outweighs any benefits.

If you're unhappy with your GP, if it was me, I'd go and see him again, tell him how you feel, if your still not happy, then see another GP.Health Question & Answer

You need to get tough with them. Confront them.

Most doctors think they know everything. They are a product of being exposed to DOGMATISM , rather than REAL KNOWLEDGE. As a result MOST won't THINK FOR THEMSELVES.

DUMP your doctor and tell him or her exactly WHY you are dumping them - you should insult him, don't be shy about it. Make him or her feel like the moron that they are. Confront him or her and don't be polite. They don't deserve it. They THINK they know, when in reality they do NOT HAVE YOUR SYMPTOMS AND DO NOT know .

In fact most doctors could learn a hell of a lot form their patients' FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE of their disease. Let this arrogant doctor know this. Don't back down and get tough with them. Do it in a dominant demeanor. Don't even let them try their tactics of trying to be dominant
