I just took mine its 158 over 78. I am 19 year old 230 pound powerlifter on a cutting cycle right now.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
This is not real bad, but not real good, either. Its higher than normal, especially for a 19-year-old athlete. I advice that you take a series of blood pressures throughout the day to find out what your baseline (normal for you) is. Textbook Normal is around 120/80, with young people and athletes tending lower. also take into consideration any training supplements you may be taking. If any are known to raise blood pressure (ma huang, ephedra, stackers, etc.), you may want to stop taking them to ensure a long athletic career, a long sexual career, and general health.

It is important to take your blood pressure while you are resting. If 158 / 78 is your resting blood pressure, when you are sitting with your back straight up and your legs flat on the floor, then yes this is a bad blood pressure. If this was your true resting BP (after checking 2 times each, on 2 different visits) your doctor would probably start you on 2 different drugs (diuretic and one other) to get you to your likely goal of 130 / 80 (I'm guessing this would be your goal.)

BUT if you were are taking your blood pressure while you are exercising, its not concerning. Try taking your blood pressure when you haven't been exercising! A normal resting blood pressure is 120 / 80.

Pat,
It used to be believed that there were two different types of physical overtraining, 1. Addisonic Overtraining and 2. Basedowic Overtraining. Nowadays, however, it is believed that the symptoms for each of these two types are what gave rise to the names, and that both stem from a common cause, "cumulative microtrauma." The first, "Addisonic" overtraining, is named after "Addison's Disease" in which the adrenal and pituitary glands are malfunctioning. Some of the symptoms of this form of training resemble the disease. This form of overtraining usually affects older or advanced athletes, and includes a slight overtired feeling, yet no increase in sleep needs, no weight loss, unusually low resting pulse rate, normal metabolic rate, higher blood pressure, but normal temperature and no psychological changes. In "Basedowic" overtraining, like "Addisonic" overtraining, the name is derived from a disease ("Basedow's Disease") in which the thyroid function is too high. While no disease, Basedowic overtraining symptoms include: easily tired, reduced appetite and weight loss, need more sleep, fast resting pulse rate, higher temperature and blood pressure, slower reaction time, and inability to perform skill movements. This type is more commonly seen in strength athletes and explosive athletes such as sprinters, jumpers and lifters. It also occurs in young athletes, less advanced athletes, and in easily excitable ones. Your symptoms resemble these and it may be beneficial if you were to have a medical examination to exclude any other cause. I would recommend that you do not overtrain.
I will discuss blood pressure, so that you will understand what I am referring to.
Blood pressure is the force applied against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. The pressure is determined by the force and amount of blood pumped and the size and flexibility of the arteries. Two numbers are used to describe blood pressure. The systolic pressure (the first and higher number) is the force that blood exerts on the artery walls as the heart contracts to pump out the blood. The diastolic pressure (the second and lower number) is the measurement of force as the heart relaxes to allow the blood to flow into the heart. Health dangers from blood pressure may vary among different age groups and depending on whether systolic or diastolic pressure (or both) is elevated. A third measurement, pulse pressure, may also be important as an indicator of severity. Pulse pressure is the difference between the systolic and the diastolic readings. The heart rate is the rate at which the heart beats per minute.
The blood pressure in the large artery of the heart, the aorta, and the other large arteries of a healthy adult is usually 120 mm Hg during the contraction of the heart (systole), and 80 mm Hg during relaxation of the heart (diastole). For adults, a normal reading can be anywhere from 120/70 to 140/90. Readings that are consistently 140/90 or above are considered high and would indicate the need for intervention.
A good guide for blood pressure readings are;
Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80
High normal blood pressure is between 120/80 and 140/90.
High blood pressure (hypertension) is 140/90 or above.
Very high blood pressure (hypertension) is 180/110 or above.
Normal human daily Blood Pressure Range can vary widely, so any single blood pressure monitor reading is not reliable. BP monitor readings must be taken at different times of day, to determine AVERAGE blood pressure levels or MAP (Mean Arterial Pressure) over time. Normal MAP is about 93 mm of mercury.
