Dysentery; Contagious?!

Question: Dysentery; Contagious.?
So, my friend came to town. During his flight he complained about diarrhea and stomach cramping. He was frequently using the bathroom for several days. Even after he left, he still complained that it was still bothering him.

Well, once he left from me, I had the same issues he had. Diarrhea, minute amounts of blood, and mucus in my stools.

Today I was reading about John McCain's captivity and it stated that he had DYSENTERY at the same time they were torturing him. So I looked it up. Well, all the symptoms were "IRONICALLY" the same as what the 2 of us went through.

My friend is from Brownsville, TX. It is a major port-town, border-town and entry way to the US from Mexico. It also has canal access for water ways and the water is not treated as it would be in the north. The sewer system is not as advanced either. So infected water is possible.

Now we been eating and sharing food and all that good stuff. Is it possible that he had Dysentery and gave it to me.? And is it possible that I've passed it along to 2 other people at work.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Yes, dysentery is quite contagious. Yes, it is possible that you caught it from him and that you passed it on to other people.

You must be sure to practice very good hand washing -- after every time you use the bathroom, before preparing food, before eating, etc. in order not to pass it on further.

You must also take care to keep hydrated -- drink plenty of fluids and eat very lightly. Rice, bananas, applesauce, plain toast are all good foods. Health Question & Answer
