Answers:
The plague bacterium,Yersinia pestis, is a rodent disease. The disease was spread to people by the fleas that bit infected rats, and then people. The disease kills the rats, and the fleas will then leave the dead rat in search of a new meal. It was also spread by contact with the fluids exuded by either the dead rats or infected people, or by airborne droplets when the rat or person had the pneumonic form of the disease. There is no cure, but plague in all forms is treatable with antibiotics if caught early enough. Plague still breaks out in various places of the world, the most recent large scale outbreak was in India in the 1994. It is controlled by improved sanitation and reducing the rodent population- which includes mice and squirrels by the way. People still do get plague, and there is no vaccination against it currently. Treated early, you can survive. If you wait too long, well- either you survive or you don't. The bubonic form is more easily survivable than either the pneumonic or systemic forms. The pneumonic form can easily kill within a day, and if the bubonic form manages to spread body wide- the systemic form- it is also usually fatal.Health Question & Answer
