Do they have to break your ribs and breastbone when doing a triple bypass?!

Question: Do they have to break your ribs and breastbone when doing a triple bypass.?
Answers:
Not any more. There is one more option. Its called minimal evasive approach or "keyhole" surgery. The Dr can fix the heart though a small incision under the left breast. It eliminates the need for bypass machines. It costs less than conventional bypass surgery, patients recover in 2 weeks, previously it took anywhere from 2-3months for recovery.Patients require fewer blood transfusions, before 40 % required transfusions with keyhole surgery it is 8%. Hospital stay previous was 7 days but with keyhole surgery its 3.5 days. The cost for keyhole surgery is 40% less than conventional surgery. It causes fewer complications.Health Question & Answer

I had heart surgery just over 3 months ago and had the breastbone broken and the ribs opened up, coughing seemed to cause the most pain, but as the other person said pillows do really help and the occasional irritation of wires (i think it was the wires) under the skin, it took about 12 weeks to fully heal, maybe a bit longer. Not sure if it will be the same for you, but just what happened with me. also i seemed to have a problem sneezing, it hurt and kind of didn't work too well.Health Question & Answer

yes they do, I had it done (double bypass) there is no real pain from the bone I was surprised that it didn't seem to hurt. I had my gall bladder out by open surgery years ago and this heart bypass was a walk in the park compared to that. Health Question & Answer

YES....but they wire it back just fine..and other than some occassional 'popping and cracking' sensations afterward,it's just fine. It'll heal.----- *coughing will be your nightmare! Keep your pillow handy!Health Question & Answer
