Question: Tips on giving up social smoking.?
Hi Guys, I only smoke when I drink, but I smoke a lot when I drink and really enjoy them. All of my friends social smoke so there is no escaping it when I got out. I really want to give them up completely but am finding it so impossible, I don't know why as I don't smoke during day or normal work evenings. Any advice on how to kick this bad habit.? Thanks. First of all, pat yourself on the back for recognizing that smoking isn't right for you and that you want to make a change. I know it's cliche, but acknowledgment is the first step towards recovery...

It sounds like your problem is more about the drinking. You're very lucky at this point in the sense that you're only smoking when you drink and that you're not fully addicted and smoking all the time. I used to smoke a pack a day and would smoke a lot more when I drank. It took me several times to quit, and once I relapsed because of night out drinking...

I know you don't want to stop hanging out with your friends, and you shouldn't have to, but for right now you REALLY need to distance yourself from them as far as drinking goes, for now.

Give yourself a few weekends away from drinking. I know it might seem impossible since everyone around you is doing it, but right now you need to take care of yourself. If you continue to go out drinking, and smoke while you do so, you're bound to wake up one morning needing a smoke real bad and your addiction will be in full force.

If you must go out drinking, bring some kind of snack you can munch on that will help with the oral fixation most smokers have. I know how it is when you drink and the taste of the alcohol makes your mouth taste all bad. The cigarette feels good, hence the reason you're doing it.

The key here is to avoid, as much as you can, any situation you put yourself into that will make you want to smoke. If you give yourself a few weeks off from drinking you'll be far less likely to smoke the next time you drink.

It's going to be hard while you are socialising with smokers! To make it harder the alcohol lowers your inhibitions so even if you are determined not to smoke the alcohol will allow you to give in!
You need to try to change some of the habits you associate with smoking... change what you drink.... where you sit... etc. I know you don't want to stop hanging out with your friends but at least try to put a little distance between you and their smoking... sit where their smoke doesn't go into your face... go to the toilet... get up and go for a little walk.... go out on the dance floor and dance!!!!!

Any time you go out drinking carry a list with you. A list of reasons what negative effects smoking has on you. For example
1) Bad for heart/lungs
2)Yellow teeth
3)Yellow fingers
4)Bad breath
5)Bad smell

etc.

Or maybe you could try Nicotine gum or a patch.? These can be bought at your local chemist/pharmacy.
