Why does it seem as though doctors are afraid to give me anxiety pills?!

Question: Why does it seem as though doctors are afraid to give me anxiety pills.?
I have been to a number of doctors (for other reasons, to get flu shots for instance), then I also mention about my anxiety problems. Since I was 12 I've had trouble sleeping and would sleep 4-5 hours sometimes 3 each night until I graduated from highschool, and it continued on til college and now I am in my 20s. With my insomnia, which I have self-diagnosed since no one took me seriously, was prescribed only with allergy pills....WHY.

THEN, for my anxiety, I was only asked to "rest it out"....OK, you see, I walk in public and I get dizzy, cold in the hands and stiff when I walk. My heart beats a million times. When I am in bed, I feel like getting a heart attack..almost everynight, coupled with involuntary jerking just when I'm abt to fall asleep. I have explained this to doctors, and none have prescribed me anything helpful. I've been suffering from these PHYSICALLY straining condition for years! I am so frustrated what is going on.?

btw I'm not overwieght and eat fairly healthy (dont like sweets and junkfood).Health Question & Answer

Sounds like your doc is hoping that you might explore other options rather than in taking pills, and he's monitoring you. We live in a self-diagnosing, pill happy society!!

Having suffered from anxiety for most of my life, I can tell you the pills don't help. What helps is to take the focus off the problem and start looking for solutions. Anxiety is usually generated by fear and its up to each person to deal with their own demons.

On the other hand, if you are having panic attacks, need to address this with your doc. Tell him about the chest tightening, the pulse and how you feel in public situations. Take your own pulse when you believe it is rapid so you can report this to the doc. If its over 100 at rest, you need to get his attention. Need to give him measurable symptoms rather than general.

Benzodiazipine are usually prescribed for anxiety which just dull your emotions and do have a high potential for abuse. Some SSRI's claim to treat anxiety. The antihistamine (diphenhidramine.?) is supposed to help you sleep, but you have to be in bed when you take it. It sometimes doesn't work. Melatonin 4mg also helps (over the counter) but you have to be in bed and take it every other night as it stops working. I wish you the best.....Health Question & Answer

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....
