Coughing up blood...What is normal?!

Question: Coughing up blood...What is normal.?
I know it's not normal to cough up blood but if you have some sort of chest infection/irritation does it happen.? or should it never happen.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
It actually happens quite regularly: when you have some sort of respiratory infection, the act of coughing a lot often results in breakage of small blood vessels in the throat and oesophagus.

In this instance, specks of blood will appear in whatever you cough up.

If it's more than specks - i.e., actual clots, or enough to stain a tissue/hanky red - then it's likely you've got a more serious infection. However, as these can usually be treated, don't be afraid of going to the doctor. Just go!

Health Question & Answer

Ive had serious lung infections and have NEVER coughed up blood.

It could be from a clot or some kind of internal bleeding--you really should go to the doctor's to get it checked out

Depends how much blood! If it is quite a bit I would seek medical advice as it is one of the definite signs of lung cancer.Health Question & Answer
