Diabetes and teeth problems?!

Question: Diabetes and teeth problems.?
My mother of 57 y.o. has had diabetes for at least 15 years.
Her teeth are causing her trouble and sometimes pain. She has lost about 6 pieces.

?Is it recommended to remove the remaining pieces so that she can use a denture.?

In teeth removal, are there especial risks due to diabetes.?

How well can she eat with dentures.? can she eat soft meat for example.?

Thanks...

Answers:
The answer above is incorrect. Diabetes does indeed cause dental problems.

Diabetes increases the risk of tooth loss as a result of severe gum disease. The gum disease leads to loss of bone in the jaw, and so the tooth falls out. If your mother has already lost six teeth, her gum disease is likely to be severe.

She should really see a dentist. A dentist can offer the best advice. She may need a prescription for antibiotics to deal with the infection in her gums, as that's what is probably causing the pain.

I don't think removing the rest of her teeth is the best solution. Ideally the gum disease should be brought under control so that she can keep as many of her own teeth as possible. She could be fitted with a plate or a bridge (depending which teeth are missing) to replace her missing teeth. Dentures are never as good as the teeth we're born with.

One very important fact: untreated gum disease can wreak havoc with glucose control. So her dental problems could actually be putting her at risk of other complications of diabetes as well. It's very important that she sees a doctor or dentist to determine whether she needs antibiotics, because if she has an infection it won't go away without medication.
