Is it possible to get around having to take AA to get a liver transplant?!

Question: Is it possible to get around having to take AA to get a liver transplant.?
What if the person stopped drinking the day he found out he had liver failure.? How are you suppose to take the required year of AA if you aren't expected to live that long.? I don't understand.

The doctors never told him he should take AA to be qualified to get a transplant until 3 months later, and all the time he was in the end-stage of Cirrhosis. My dad could have had 3 months of AA behind him if someone told us he had to do it.

It's not right. How can a doctor tell someone with less than 6 months to live that he has to go to AA for a year before he can be qualified for a transplant.?Health Question & Answer

i know it must be difficult for you to accept, as its your dad's life we are talking about. but, other people make the list sooner as they likely didnt make poor choices that caused thier liver problem. also, if an alcoholic is given a liver before he is in true"recovery", chances are, he will drink again, and the whole thing will start over.

i lost a brother in law recently this same way. well, not exactly...he was told he would be dead within a year if he didnt stop drinking. he didnt stop, and he was not eligible for a transplant. he died within 6 months.Health Question & Answer

See if you can be tested as a living donor. They sometimes only need a piece of the liver to help get it better. Try the link below, maybe something can be done because it's family and you don't have to wait on the list.Health Question & Answer
