Question: Weaning from cigs one week at a time until going cold turkey.?
So i have been smoking for about 5 years now and im ready to quit. The last time i tried to just quit cold turkey i completely freaked out. I was irritable, i cried...i was just a mess. So i thought that if i prepared myself and smoked like 5 cigs a day for one week, then 4 a day for a week and then 3 a day for a week...and so on and so forth until the final week of just one a day for a week and then giving them up totally the next week seems like a good way to prepare. Have any of you tried this method before.? Any advice of how to deal with the withdrawals once ive gone cold turkey.? Any methods you know of to curb cravings as well.? I did something similar and it worked. At first I started not smoking during breaks at work. After I was successful with that, I added not smoking in my car. After that I added not smoking in my house. After that I added not smoking unless I was drinking. Finally I quit for good. I didn't have a real plan when I started, but the gradual thing worked for me. It took me over 3 months to quit. I think you have a good plan. You need to do what works for you. For me the hardest part was breaking the habit of having a cigarette at certain times of the day or situations more than the actual nicotine addiction. You may want to add nicotine gum to your plan to help with your cravings and increase your chances of success. I have not smoked for 2 years and I don't miss it at all. I do wish you luck! It's not easy giving up cig's. Your method is the best one.
Just remember, like a alcoholic you can not, I repeat, can no ever just have one!
If you do, then your going to be back where you started. If possible avoid places and people who are smoking around you, I know this is going to be hard to do. Candy can help replace your habit, but stick to sugar free candy.

Well...as you said you are weaning yourself off, you are not going cold turkey. More like luke warm turkey. ;)

It is probably a better way to go if you can't just cut out the cigs and push though. In the end you need to do what works for you. You just need the will now to stick to your ration of cigs and not go over your designated amount.

If nothing else use your "freak out" day as a reminder of what the cancer sticks are doing to your body and your mind. That should be some motivation to kick the habit.Health Question & Answer

all i can say is that cigs really mess u up..i feel like u can do better than that trying to get off of cigs....but i wish ui luck....since u been smoking 4 five years i feel like that is the besy way to go cold turkey.....

I too want to quit. A customer which I lost there number showed me a product availible at any fine smoke shops that allow you to smoke in non smoking areas it is not cheep but he let me try one. It has batterys and a cartrige it only delivers to your lungs nicotine no smoke but when you exhale there is a vapor that comes out of your lungs. I am looking for it for you but can't seem to find it.it comes in a case around 50 and then you can buy the nicotine inserts all types,menthol,regular,non filter taste etc. it was not designed for a stop smoking aid but that is what is happening too it. Yep, your cold turkey strategy will help you cut back on the cigarettes and then........you will fall off the wagon and smoke more than ever. Cold turkey means STOP with no other concessions or alternatives. When you get the HABIT out of your head and hands and find something else to think about and something to do with your hands, you're already well on your way. You have programmed your mind for a cigarette when you awake, after meals, while others are smoking, with a cup of coffee, when you get mad, when you are stressed and now you have the habit. Along with that you must hold something between your fingers or you feel naked, you have the habit. Get down to your last 5 cigarettes and you panic and burn up the road to the nearest store to purchase more.

Ask yourself if you awake during the night and have to get up 6-8 times just to smoke or if you sleep the whole night through. If you answer that you awake to get up and smoke then you are addicted, otherwise you just have the habit.

I was a smoker for 17 years and with the help of God, I put my unlit cigarette down in the ash tray and never lit another one. It has now been 24 years since I smoked and I've never craved them and it's as if I never smoked. Oh, cigarettes were 50-cents a pkg when I quit.Health Question & Answer
