Type 2, trying to lose weight, fusterated?!

Question: Type 2, trying to lose weight, fusterated.?
i found out a year ago i was diabetic and now recently high cholesterol and high blood pressure are an issue. i am over weight and having such a hard time losing weight. at first when i found out about the diabetes, i lost 16 pounds quickly and no problems. the doctor started me right away on medication that is causing me to go kinda low with the my blood sugar at night and early mornings. i have expressed this concern with her and she didnt seem too worried. i try so hard to follow what everyone is trying to do, but then i cave and eat and do the things im not suppose to and feel guilty and beat myself up over it. when i get low it seems like im out of control and can eat everything in site. its insane!! its like i know im not suppose to be eating this, but i do it anyways..

how do i learn to control myself!! i know this may be a stupid question. but i want to lose weight and control my blood sugar. how do i finally get to the point that im doing that everyday and stick to it. i can do great for a week or a few days. then its like i give up and then start all over. im so fusterated. should i see my doctor.? how do i deal with over eating.? i am really active already. i work alot and im always on my feet and moving around the house. i go for walks around my neighborhood more often too. but the eating problem is holding me back from the weight loss.

please no mean comments!!Health Question & Answer

i know what you are going through. i was just diagnosed in aug. of this year.
first of all,NOBODY IS PERFECT!!! don't be up on yourself for something that i am sure every diabetic has done in thier life. i am admitting that i have too "cheated" and ate something i shouldn't of. don't follow "what everyone is trying to do". you have to remember that what is good for one person might not be good for another. we actually have two diabetics in my family, my mother and i.
we both are taking a diabetic education class. have you looked into any of those.? we are finding it quite helpful. venting on the internet is one way to go. the classes we attend talk a lot about how to count carbohydrates. that is what our bodies use as sugar/energy. an average person should eat anywhere around 45 carbs at any one meal. that means you can eat anything you want, but remember, it would be better to choose something that would fill you.take into acount that some things are "freebies", fruits and veggies and some meats and cheeses, ie cottage cheese, string cheese, fat free yogurt sweetened with artifical sugar. you should eat three meals and about 2 or 3 snacks a day. snacks should be about 15 carbs each. instead of reaching for a candy bar, how about some sugar free jello, you can even add some canned fruit to it and whipped cream.
i like to keep sugar free hard candies nearby to suck on when my sweet tooth kicks in.
the key to losing weight is to burn more calories that what you consume.

the rule to remember when you get low is the rule of 15/15. if you get real low you should eat 15 carbs then wait 15 minutes. then check your blood glucose, if it still doesn't go up enough, repeat the process. good choices would be glucose tablets, 6oz fruit juice, half of a can of regular soda, or if need be one of those snack packs of candy that they sell, you know like the ones they give out for halloween.
just remember that its not that you "can't" eat everything, you have to "CHOOSE" what to eat. if someone offers you something you shouldn't have, instead of saying i can't say i choose not to. you are not alone in this, as there are probably more of "us" than "them".
if at anytime you what just to vent or ask questions feel free to email me, just look at my profile for more information

Hi!

You should take a look at my diabetes website which has many great recipe, nutrition, and food ideas on it.

For starters, eat low-fat and small portions sticking to vegetables that are mostly not starchy. Watch portions on the starchy ones.

Activity is good, so you just need to watch what you are choosing. Again, see my informative 200 plus page website on diabetes.Health Question & Answer

Yeah, I think everyone goes a bit out of control when their low. My tip is to have something, and then wait, wait 5-10 mins, and if you are still low, then have something extra.Health Question & Answer

So, this is one reason to carry the Glucose Tablets instead of using food to treat a low. The tablets don't taste horrible, but they don't really taste like a snickers bar either--if you know what I mean. They can be a great way for treating lows. That way it's much easier to treat the low with a realistic amount of carbs instead of going overboard.

As for losing the weight, try using the color test. Before you start eating, check your plate for color. You should have greens, reds, yellows, and oranges on your plate as often as possible. Too many times in the US our plates are brown and white. That means we're eating the wrong kind of food that will make it much harder to lose weight.

No mean comments, but some damn hard unsugared facts.

You need to understand that diabetes is a systemic disease... the sugar in your blood affects everything in your body... mainly your circulatory system... Diabetes causes blindness, cardiac problems, stroke, gangrene in your extremities, and in men, ED, and in women the lack of having an orgasm. This list is endless, and it goes on and on. Google it. Unpleasant. Then, print out a copy, and tape it to your pantry, and refrigerator.

Hon, ya get one body, and about 80 good ones.....and if you want it to last a long time without failing you, you must take care of it.

If you need to seek counseling, get it. If you need to stay on a diet from now until you're 80, make sure you get to live in a body that has both its feet and legs. See a dietitian.

Do some research on the affect of diabetes that is left uncontrolled for years, and by those who never lost that weight... they age quickly, and unpleasantly. And being in denial is your worst enemy...

No one can teach you self control. That comes from some logic and a whole lot of fear, along with "I don't want that to happen to me."

Is your sight worth a cupcake.?

Are your legs worth a chocolate pecan pie.?

Those are decisions only you can make.... no one is holding a gun to your head, hon.

No one.

Any one can do fine for a week. Make a life style change is hard, isn't it.?

Join a gym, see a dietician, seek some counseling, and opt for you controlling your future, not your obesity and diabetes controlling you.Health Question & Answer

Oh, yeah!! the "vacuum the fridge and pantry" syndrome! It happens to all of us when we go low.

Ok, here are some tips from my Endo which have helped me to stay on a fairly level path:

1. Plan a "cheat treat" each week. Just half as much as you would otherwise have had. Like half a normal serving of "Death by Chocolate Cake" or half a slice of Pecan Pie. This saves you from having guilts too!

2. Do not try to go low fat while going low carb for your glucose counting!! Have 1/3 each protein, fats and carbs. This means have butter on your whole grain toast and have bacon and fried eggs for breakfast. about 15 grams of carb.

3. Try hard to keep your grams of carb within 100 to 125 per DAY. That doesn't seem much food, but it really is.

4. Sneaky Carbs: Carrots, Corn, any cereals, potatoes, soft sweet fruits, rices, dried beans. It is surprising to many people that the above are all nearly pure sugar! Dieticians recommend dried beans as excellent, but they haven't eaten them then checked their glucose 90 minutes later!!

5. Always eat breakfast and a bedtime snack. You can fudge on all other meals and snacks, but not those 2!

6. Walk, Walk, Walk and Walk some more! Walking may not seem much exercise, but an hour every day as fast as you can does help with the weight loss and the glucose control as well as with high blood pressure.

From me! Don't worry too much about the high cholesterol as it should resolve when you have tight control of your glucose! Doctor keeps telling me I need to take her cholesterol meds, but my cholesterol is in the low total and high HDL levels. I see no reason to take more meds than absolutely necessary.Health Question & Answer

I understand the feeling when you have a low bg, you kind of panic and then usually eat too much and get a high bg. It sounds like you may need a small snack at bedtime.
Have you been to Diabetes Educator/Nutritionist.? They can help you set up an eating plan that will take into consideration your wanting to lose weight and control your blood sugars, cholesterol and blood pressure And explain why it is so important -maybe if you do a little research into the complications that out of control blood sugar can cause that would be an incentive. It is pretty common with diabetes that you can have symptoms of depression, one of which is feeling out of control. If you can find a support group to attend that would help. also ask about other diabetes medications. Most GPs seems to just per scribe metformin. There are some others that might be more appropriate for you.
