Why are my lungs crackling?!

Question: Why are my lungs crackling.?
A little background. I was diagnosed with pneumonia on Wednesday and even though I've been on antibiotics since then, I feel like crap. I almost feel worse. And now, my lungs have started crackling quietly when I breathe out- AFTER I started the treatment. Is this normal.? And why are my lungs crackling.? Did the antibiotics just not kick in yet.?

Well, I'm not a doctor but I am a nurse. Crackles are usually present in pneumonia - and it's typical to have crackles even when the pneumonia is being treated. When you get pneumonia, fluid and inflammatory cells get into the lung. The inflammatory cells narrow the bronchi in your lungs. As the fluid starts to go away (once the you're on antibiotics and the infection is being treated), the inflammatory cells are left and the lung tissue dries out a bit. This leads to the crackles - which are actually the closing and opening of the bronchioles - normal for pneumonia and recovery from pneumonia.

Of course, you should always check with you doctor to make sure nothing else is going on.Health Question & Answer

Hi. The crackles you hear is fluid in your alveoli. The little air sacs in your lungs. The crackles are mostly heard when someone inhales. When you have fluid in them it makes the alveoli hard to open up and when the do they "pop" open, this is why you hear crackles. The term that describes this lung sound is called "rales" It just means that you still have the pneumonia. Health Question & Answer

I am not a doctor though my nephew had the same symptoms with Mycoplasma germs before he died of aids complications. You might ask you doctor if he tested you thoroughly. Health Question & Answer
