What's the difference between being in remission and being "cancer free?"?!


Question: What's the difference between being in remission and being "cancer free.?".?
I ran into my old P.E. teacher in the grocery store today and she told me she had breast cancer. She's doing well now and the DR tells her she's "cancer free" at this point although not necessarily in remission.

That is kind of a strange way to word it as you would rather be cancer free.
Remission is the absence of active cancer with the possibility of return of disease activity. Cancer free means there is no cancer and it is not expected to return.
