It will really depend on how much hair your son actually has. If he's got a full head, then you will want to check at the underside of the hair at the nape of his neck and behind his ears. Those are the two spots most favored by little critters and where they prefer to lay the eggs. You can check individual hair shafts, close to the scalp. You are looking for tiny little white-grey ovals stuck to the hair shaft itself, and you can scrape them off between fingernails. If he actually has them, you will know because you will find the eggs and possibly a critter. There's no real way to prevent them, although you can try combing a bit of tea tree oil through his hair. It's perfectly safe, and helps repel to an extent, although it will not kill them. Don't get too wrapped up over it, and start getting used to the idea. Sooner or later, we all go through the lice episode- it's territory you just deal with when you have kids that get near others. Your best defense is to keep his hair cut short and close to his head, teach him not to share headgear every, and keep tabs on the back of his neck. He's a bit young for the commercial lice shampoos, so you will want to check with your pediatrician if you find evidence. Aside from that, gather up the pillowcase, hats, and other head related items, including the combs and brushes. Wash those in hot water, and bake them dry. For items that can't do a wash, soak them in water and microwave them for 3-5 minutes. You don't have to sterilize the house, the bed, the stuffed animals and all that. Lice like human heads, and human blood- they don't live in cracks and crevices waiting to leap out at you unawares. Honest. If you have to treat your son, it's best to treat all the human heads in the household all at the same time. School age children and up should be shampooed again in 5 days. Leave the family pet alone, human head lice like humans only. And don't kick yourself, it's not your fault. It's nothing to be ashamed of either- it's a fair compliment, since lice actually prefer a nice CLEAN head of hair. I know, not the compliment you want, eh.? Anyway, chill and check the head first. Call the pediatrician for advice if needbe. And don't forget to breathe. It happens. Health Question & Answer

sOME FACTS ABOUT LICE FIRST.

They can only live two days without a human host. However, the eggs can live without a human host and they take 10-12 days to hatch.
muah hahahahahahahahahahahaha

The RID shampoo will kill lice bugs. It will not kill eggs.
We washed everysingle item of clothes, every baby doll, all the couch cushions etc.We treted outr hair. We shaved my sons head, cause he is too little for the RID. My 12 year old did not get every single egg out, so..... two weeks later we were itching again. I shaved my head that night.(began a job working for a quadriplegic the next day) borrowed money(can you hear the dramtic music in the background) to wash every single thing again.
We could still not get every egg out. They literally glue the eggs on the hair folicle. the combs dont work. You have to pick them out. However, they dont glue the eggs more than an inch away from the scalp. also mayonaise smothers the lice. So..... after my son and i were prevented from having bugs again, to save my preacious daughters head, we washed it wtih rid again. Then for the next three WEEKS EVERY NIGHT WE PUT ABOUT AN INCH THICVK WORTH OF MAYO ON HER SCALP,with a shower cap. She washed it the following morning. That way. if any of those nasty littel buggers tried to be born, they didnt have long
