Is it fatel for a baby if the ventricals to its heart are in the wrong place?!

Question: Is it fatel for a baby if the ventricals to its heart are in the wrong place.?
My sister is 5 months along in her pregnancy. We got a call today from the doctor saying that the baby's heart looks to be abnormal. They want to send her to another hospital to do more tests. How much should we worry and is it fatal.?Health Question & Answer

Need some more information. I'm not a pediatric cardiologist, but the two malformations I think of when you mention "ventricles in the wrong place" are dextrocardia and transposition of the great arteries. Neither is due to the ventricles being in the wrong place per se. Dextrocardia is due to the heart being rotated to the right instead of the left and can have little to no impact on the infant. Transposition of the great arteries involves the two ventricles being "hooked up" to the wrong arteries. Instead of the left ventricle sending blood to the body via the aorta, it is hooked up to the pulmonary artery. The right ventricle should send blood to the lungs via the pulmonary arteries but instead is hooked up to the aorta. This condition requires heart surgery early on, but can lead to a relatively normal life.

Wikipedia has decent pages on both of these. Hopefully my answer helps a little.Health Question & Answer

It would be next to impossible in your situation not to worry. Until they run additional tests no one on answers can answer your question because there's no information. The baby has survived for 5 months which is good, but all you can do is wait, worry and pray. I hope that everything goes well for your family, take care, Donna, try posting your question under pregnancy alsoHealth Question & Answer
