Answers:
I have been a diabetic for 3 years, and when i am 86 (or something around that) i do take my lantus (long-acting insulin) and just remember to eat a large snack after. Check about 15-30 minutes later to make sure your blood sugar has gone up before sleeping.Health Question & Answer

Are you sure he took 80 units of insulin to cover the 80 grams of carbs that he took.? If he did, I think you're in for a trip to the ER. I've been type 1 diabetic for 28 years now and I've never heard of anyone taking insulin on that ratio ... 1:1 (1 unit of insulin for each gram of carbohydrate).

I'm not medically qualified, but if your husband doesn't take his Lantus tonight I think you're going to have a day, tomorrow, when his blood sugar levels are going to be high for most of the day.

If you are sure that your husband took 80 units of insulin at 5:30, I'd make sure you've got some readily digestible glucose for during the night ... something like normal, sweetened, orange juice, or glucose powder mixed in water.

If he does have a hypoglycemic reaction during the night, make sure he takes the fast-acting glucose and then has something a little more substantial right after ... something like a sandwich or some cookies. This will prevent his blood sugar from falling rapidly again once the fast-acting glucose has been used up.

Best of luck to you both.Health Question & Answer

Yes, he should go ahead and take the recommended dose of Lantus. I've been a type 1 diabetic since May, 1955. I was on a mixture of Lilly Semi-lente and Ultra-lente insulin from 7 years old until I was almost 40 years and 9 months old. I've always been extremely sensitive to fast acting insulin, and my sensitivity has actually INCREASED since I've gone through menopause.

In several months, your husband might want to tell/ask his doctor that he wants to learn how to adjust his insulin dosage himself. I've always been sliding scale, but my mom had three semesters of medical school behind her when she diagnosed me. All the pediatrician did was confirm her diagnosis.Health Question & Answer

80 units of insulin to 80 grams carbs. seems awfully high, are you sure that is what his dr. said to take.? If he really took 80 units of fast acting I would keep checking his bg and make sure it doesn't go any lower, if it keeps dropping I would have him eat a small snack and call his dr. about the lantus.Health Question & Answer
