When you take insulin before meals, do you take it before snacks like at bedtime too?!

Question: When you take insulin before meals, do you take it before snacks like at bedtime too.?
My doctor told me to take insulin on a sliding scale before meals, but I don't remember whether he told me to do it before the snack at bedtime.
I do 3 small meals and 1 snack at bedtime and have to check my sugar levels to see how much insulin I have to take before I eat, but what about before the snack.?Health Question & Answer

The reason generally that you have a snack before bedtime is so you don't get low overnight. If you are taking a long acting insulin, that's generally the one you would do at night time. There are a lot of different variables though. Talk to your dr.
It can be so overwhelming at first. Its best to get off on the right foot, try your best, it will be worth it down the road. Hope you get things worked outHealth Question & Answer

If you have a big snack, some doctors will tell you to use a little more insulin. But ask your doctor to be sure. Normally, if you eat a regular snack that contains only around 15 grams of carbs, you won't have to take extra insulin. The snack before bedtime is to insure that you don't have a low while you are asleep. Be sure to check your blood sugars before bedtime too.Health Question & Answer

That's the beauty of insulin pumps...I give myself a dose of insulin (bolus) whenever I eat anything with carbs, no matter how small. But with injections, the guideline they gave me was to inject myself whenever my carbs exceeded 5g. So if you eat a chocolate kiss, don't bother. But a small cookie.? Yes. Hopefully someday you can get on a pump which will make you much more stable...they are wonderful. Health Question & Answer

My friends daughter, has type 1 Diabetes. She only has insulin before her main meals. She doesn't have any insulin before her snack before bedtime. It is best to check with your doctor to see what is right for you. Just ring the surgery and ask the doctor to give you a call, it will save you going in for an appointment unless it is necessary to do so.Health Question & Answer
