Thyroid Issue, inconclusive diagnosis with large nodules.?!

Question: Thyroid Issue, inconclusive diagnosis with large nodules..?
My doctors have found questionable and suspicious thyroid nodules that are about 3 cm (over 1 inch) in diameter! I am very scared and worried, I might have to have surgery. If anyone can relate in anyway please share your experiences with me. Like how is the surgery like.? The after affect.? What kind of an issue you had...Anything, Please!
Thank You because as I said I am very scared and worried!Health Question & Answer

I had thyroid cancer 3 years ago when I was 32. My biopsy came back "suspicous" so we went ahead with the surgery, and it turned out to be papillary thyroid cancer. It's very scary when you hear the word cancer, but it really has not been bad (knock on wood). After the surgery my throat was sore (felt like a giant lump in your throat) but not terrible. Within a week I felt pretty much back to normal. I had the radioactive iodine treatment (just a pill your swallow) and that doesn't have any side effects (except having to limit contact with people for a few days). It's been 3 years now and I feel perfectly fine. I take thyroid medication every day and have a follow-up blood test once a year. Other than that I am perfectly fine. Hang in there - this waiting part is definitely the worst. I also included a web site below which has helpful info on thyroid nodules and will probably answer a lot of your questions.Health Question & Answer

I was in the exact same position a little over a year again. Nodule 3 cm in my thyroid, suspicious for cancer. They did a fine needle biopsy but it was inconclusive - there was the presence of abnormal cells but they couldn't tell for sure. I hadn't been to the doctor in 6 years and it sure taught me a lesson, that getting annual checkups is important as my doctor caught it while doing a physical. After the fine needle biopsy, I went in for surgery and they removed it, sent the specimen to pathology and it came back positive for papillary cancer. Since then, I have been on levoxyl (synthetic thyroid). I refused to do the radioactive iodine since it was encapsulated and I felt it was unnecessary. If you have any questions, please ask as I've done a lot of research on this!

Oh and also, make sure you find a good surgeon in a large hospital. I had very little scaring afterwards but I know some that had much larger ones.Health Question & Answer

A good friend of mine had similar and had his thyroid removed then radioactive iodine therapy.

He couldn't attend classes for 3 weeks because he was radioactive - and fortunately he didn't have a girlfriend at the time :-)

The scar faded really quickly and is only obvious to those who know his history.

He is on thyroid replacement therapy and is fit and well 8 years post-operativelyHealth Question & Answer
