OK little miss pink let's get you sorted out!

Iron deficiency anaemia (don't get confused with the other types of anaemia) will initially cause fatigue.

If it allowed to go on it will cause slight breathlessness and then the other symptoms follow on later if it is left untreated.

The most reliable way you can find out is to have a blood test. Just go to your doctor and explain the symptoms and ask if you can be tested.

Alternatively do either or both of the following tests on yourself:-

1. Press hard on your thumb or finger nail. When you let go it will look white. the pink colour should return immediately. If there is a delay in the colour returning, you pre probably anaemic.

2. Pull the lower eyelid down and look at the colour of the sac. It should be red. If it is a pale pink or whitish, you are anaemic.

Your doctor will put you on a course of iron tablets and you will be fine.

If you are anaemic and you are put on iron medication be aware that when you have a bowel movement the stool will be black. This is a normal side effect of iron and is perfectly ok and nothing to worry about. It will return to normal when you finish the course of tablets.

hope this helps.

the only one to tell you is a doctor, you need to have a blood test done in order to find out your white blood cell count.I have been anemic but got better with Centrum stress formula vitamins. the low blood pressure you experience is most likely connected to your unhealthy onesided food intake, but the blood in your stool should be checked out.Health Question & Answer

Get a blood test at your doctors. So they can count your red blood cells.

Get more Iron in your diet. Eat meat like beef steak and liver.
If your vegetarian or something eat leafy greens, like spinach.

Drink milk! Never go hungry.. your red blood cells may drop.Health Question & Answer

take a real gold ring and rub it across your forhead and if it puts a black line then your iron levels are low. but i would go to the doctors and get a blood test to see if you hace low iron .Health Question & Answer

firstly well done on your research. you will need that skill when (if) you get into university.

these are the signs and symptoms of anaemia:

fatigue (you have)
headaches
faintness (you have)
breathlessness or fast breathing (you have - perhaps related)
angina (which is chest pain - but your too young)
claudication (pain in your calfs when walking - you may be too young)
pallor (do you look pale.? look in the mirror and push down your lower eyelid, is it a healthy, bloody colour, or is it pale.?)
tachycardia (fast heart rate)
koilonychia (search on google images - this may take years to develop)

I want you to remmeber that these signs are not madatory, some people have anaemia and are asymptomatic - everyones different. No one person would have all of these symptoms.

Anaemia can be caused by a lot of deficiencies, of which nutrients are absorbed in different parts of your intestine. Iron is absorbed in the middle part of the small intestine called the duodenum. This can be hampered not only by malnutrition, but also by malabsorption. Which is commonly caused by diseases like IBD: chrons or ulcerative colitis. Bleeding from the anus can be a sign of either of these. But there are many signs of these illnesses, such as diarrhorea, and/or constipationmalaise, weight loss, ulcers of the mouth, pain in the anus, tummy pain.

If I were you, I would book an appointment with the doctor. He will check to see if you do have IBD, and he will do some blood tests to diagnose anaemia. In the mean-time, eat more vegetables especially green stuff. come on, theres loads of stuff out there. ble,nd it with other things you love, make some new dishes. research for reciepes. let me give you a nice taster: broccoli, colliflower, peas (mmmm), lettuce, lemon, cabbage, spinach, lovely foods with all different tastes which would go really well with some salt and tomato. Nice and fresh. also, keep hydrated. Let me know how you do. suziHealth Question & Answer

I simple blood test can determine if your anemic. It sounds like you may need a checkup anyway and that is usually done as part of the checkup. You can take an iron suplement and see if it makes you feel bette.

Being Short of Breath, dizzy, and having chest pains can be much more serious than anemia. I work as a 911 dispatcher and would send an amublance immediatley to somebody with those symptoms. I urge you to get checked out!Health Question & Answer

Living an alternate lifestyle is a big decision and shouldn't be taken lightly. People eat meat because it is good for us and provides us with the nutrients and vitamins we need (when incorporated in a sensible diet). Choosing to take meat out of your equation is most likely the culprit for the signs you describe. I would suggest getting with a nutritionist to plan a healthy menu for yourself that would make sure you are getting enough of what you need every day.

The dizziness and heart pounding you describe sounds to me like symptoms of low blood pressure. The fatigue is mostly associated with anemia; but it could all be a product of your vegetarian diet. Vegetarians have to make an extra effort to get all their vitamins and nutrients.

You can take supplements but there is controversy over whether or not your body absorbs them in pill form the way they are absorbed through the natural eating process.

Do a search online; perhaps there is a site dedicated to helping vegetarians make healthy eating choices so that their lifestyle doesn't affect their health in a negative way.Health Question & Answer
