they do kinda hurt a little bit, but after a while you get used to the pain.. in the beginning, at least for me they hurt like someone pinching me really hard, but after about a few days the pain went down.. the thing you wanna make sure of though is that you drink a lot of water, b/c if you don't the part under the expander will get extremely dry and will hurt like a ******.. also, the food thing is true.. you can get removable ones though.. if you can i would get the removable ones b/c you don't get the food thing or the dry mouth thing.. hopefully this helps!Health Question & Answer

Expanders shouldn't hurt at all.. You will feel some pressure around your nose and upper jaw.. You will only need the expander in for approximately 2-4 months, then a retainer is placed.. Pre-puberty is when most expanders are used, not often after that.. Your upper palate is actually 2 seperate bones at this time.. Turning it at night before bed and taking either ibuprofen or tylenol will usually help with any discomfort..
If it hurts, and I mean pain, not pressure when the expander is turned, let your orthodontist know immediately..Health Question & Answer
