Answers:
A cavity is sometimes visible and appears as a stained brown, yellow or black color.. This is because the outer layer of the tooth (enamel) is soft and deteriorating.. However, cavities are not always visible just looking at the tooth- which is where xrays come in.. The xrays will show in-between the teeth and around existing fillings, which can't really be seen just looking in the mouth..
Often, a cavity will hurt when exposed to sweets (like chocolate), cold things (though cold doesn't always mean a cavity), and when chewing.. If the cavity has not gone all the way through the enamel to the underlying layer, you may not have ANY pain or sensitivity.. But once it does, it will spread very fast and cause pain.. Your best bet is to go to the dentist.. If it's a chipped tooth, the dentist can smooth it out so you don't fracture the tooth further.. If it's a cavity, the sooner you catch it, the better.. My dental hygienist checks for cavities by just pressing down on my molars in the cracks w/ one of those pointy things.. They sell those pointy things at drugstores and you could do that yourself if you wanted.......? Sometimes you can't tell if you have a cavity, but the cavity is deep inside the tooth, so I'd imagine it would feel different than a chipped tooth..Health Question & Answer
you can tell if you have a cavity if it hurts or aches when you eat sweets or something really cold.. to be certain, go to a dentist so they can take an xray to see if you even have one, and fix it before it gets worse..Health Question & Answer
