Why did my dentist give me a temporary filling rather than a proper one?!
Question: Why did my dentist give me a temporary filling rather than a proper one.?
Answers:
Usually it's because the cavity is very deep and close to the nerve and they are not entirely sure whether a filling will be enough or whether you will end up needing a root canal. So they drill out the decay and then put a medicated, temporary filling in for a few weeks to try to calm down the nerve. If you don't get any more pain from the tooth, they will probably just do a proper filling in a few weeks, but if the tooth still causes pain then it generally means that you'll need to have a root canal done.Health Question & Answer
A temporary filling usually contains medicine in it, as opposed to a traditional filling. I think it is because of the make up of this type of filling, that it does not last as long as a traditional filling, hence temporary.
They are used when the filling is very close to the nerve.

Are you sure it's a temporary filling.? It would be very weird to give you a temp filling without a follow up appointment for more work. I think you need give them a ring to see if it is a temporary filling or if you need more appointments.Health Question & Answer
