Okay, the procedure of actually putting braces on does not hurt. It's virtually painless. It's just annoying having your mouth open for a long time while they're there cementing the brackets on.
What's painful is a couple of hours afterward. You see, the wire in your teeth is applying force to your teeth that your mouth isn't used to. So your teeth are going to feel sore, and you won't be able to eat any solids for a about a week. But just take some tylenol and you'll be fine. And don't worry about looking bad. You only think you look bad because you're not used to them. You'll only look different temporarily until people become accustomed to seeing you with braces.
