How rare is it for someone to die form getting Gastric Bypass surgery?!

Question: How rare is it for someone to die form getting Gastric Bypass surgery.?
Hi. I'm fifteen years old, and am really worried about my mom getting the Bypass surgery.
She lost her mom when she was 12 and I have always had a feeling I was going to lose her before I was ready, and now she is getting this surgery, so I was wondering how rare is it for someone to die getting this surgery.?

She is about five foot one and weighs like 190lbs do you think she is going to get through this with flying colors.?

Thanks!

Hey, my mom had a gastric bypass too = )

She had it a little over 4 years ago. The risks are very low! My mom did have complications after her surgery however. Her doctor nicked an artery, which caused her to bleed internally. She ended up being in the hospital for over 6 weeks, when she should have been in for only 3 days. What happened to her is extremely rare though, don't worry, your mom will be fine, and she will look and feel great when it's all said and done! My mom went from weighing 278 to a stable 124 in a matter of 2 years. Don't worry, she will be fine! I'm sorry about your dad, my dad passed away in March 2006, and my mom is all I have as well! Just let her know that you really want to be there for her and that it's very important to you. Let her know you care about her wellness! Good luck to you, and just have no worries because she will be better off in the long run after this surgery!Health Question & Answer

Nowadays, the surgery has been perfected with new techniques and skilled surgeons more than it had when all the deaths were happening. There is a risk for all surgeries but your Mom sounds like she has it under control. Your mom doesn't want to put you out in the lobby worrying, she would worry about you more if you are there. It is understandable your fear for her after losing your father. No matter where you are you will worry but she knows that you will be probably at school with your friends and whoever will keep in touch with you about her condition. She will need you more when she goes home. I had lap band and my children, all grown, had to work, but I did have someone that I trusted to go with me and they kept my kids up to date on how I was. Good Luck and she will be in God's Hands, and I will say prayers for you and her.Health Question & Answer

Honey, its safer now then it use to be.My sister was going to have it done but once they got in there her liver was in large so they could not do it. I have seem people than has had it done .Everything went good. I was going to have it done but I back out of it. I didn't want to live on shakes the rest of my life. I had a friend who lost over 200 lbs. Your mom should try other ways to lose weight before she does this. If not I hope she will be ok. Protein shanks don;t taste good Health Question & Answer

if its at a good hospital, the chances are extremely slim. my grandfather who's over 80 just had a triple bypass surgery on his heart and it worked out completely. so trust me, it will all work out very well because doctors do know what they're doing. god bless you for being so concerned about your mother at 15!

*i mean its slim she'll die. its like 99.99999 percent she'll live, so dont worry about it.Health Question & Answer

She isnt big enough at 190 lb for Bypass surgery .. she must be bigger , and yes there is risk - but there is even more health risks for staying fat - Diabeties , heart problems, cancers etc.
Has she looked into the Lapband .? No cutting on the tummy with that one, and way smaller insicsions.
