technique and type workout are more important than what exercise equipment.
also depends on what the goals are. bodybuilding,powerlifting,fitness,weight loss.
example. since i like to increase my strength for deadlifting. no machine can substitute for deadlifting a barbell.
i think free weights are better for developing functional strength for sports.
but for bodybuilding,fitness and weight loss i think either would do equally as well.
