Lifting weights to build muscle and help with weight loss?!

Question: Lifting weights to build muscle and help with weight loss.?
Well, I'm planning on starting a diet/workout routine, and I've heard that if you lift weights and build some muscle first, you burn calories faster and more efficiently. We have an elliptical, so I'll be doing cardio on that, and I believe my mom has some of those little one arm weights hanging around somewhere. For someone who's never done this sort of exercise, what weight should I start with, how should I do my workout, for how long, and how often.? I'm 15 and about 40 lbs overweight for my height, and any advice is appreciated!Health Question & Answer

Don't listen to the first girl.

It's an awesome way. Just start with 5 lbs and use them with lunges and what not too..(makes it tons harder) you will see results.

After 5lbs get too hard...go to 10 lbs weights.

5 lbs in each hand...you think it's not too much...but it's good til you get used to it.

Good Luck! Enjoy the muscles and tone :) Health Question & Answer

I wouldn't know how much weight to start with, only because I don't know what you could handle. I would suggest 20 lbs. and do sets of 15 for each arm 3 times a day. Be careful, when going on a diet or working out it's healthy until you lose more then 10% of your BMI (body mass index). also if you are serious about losing weight, work on your posture, the better it is the more calories you burn while doing cardiovascular workouts.Health Question & Answer

YES! Weight training builds and firms your muscle, which burns fat more efficiently.
