Does this mean that my cholesterol has gone down?!

Question: Does this mean that my cholesterol has gone down.?
I have a question for you:

About 3 yrs. ago I weighed 30 pounds more than I do now (I was about 10 pounds overweight) and my cholesterol was 199--almost considered "high" and I was a vegetarian at the time.

Now as a healthy-weighted Omnivore I've been told my blood pressure is low-normal.

Does this mean my cholesterol has gone down now.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Cholesterol and blood pressure are totally unrelated to eachother (except that they have to do with the heart) They don't rise and fall together.

Being of a healthy weight usually means that your BP and cholesteral are normal, but that is not always the case. I am actually of a very low weight and have slightly high cholesterol. The onnly way to see if it went down is to get it checkedHealth Question & Answer

No . There is no direct relationship between cholesterol levels and BP. But elevated cholesterol over time leads to atherosclerosis, which can contribute to high BP. The best way to control cholesterol is to limit total fat intake , have a higher ratio of "good fats" like fish and flax oils, Use a spread that contains plant sterols and stanols (like Take Control) instead of margarine or butter. And maybe most importantly, eat a lot of soluable fibre like beans and oat bran cereals. The old rhyme about beans being good for your heart is good advise. We need about 25- 30 grams of fibre a day. Daily 20 min excercise also helps.
A lot of times ,BP will go down as a result of losing weight.
I dont believe vegetarian or vegan eating habits are necessarily healthy. The best diet contains small amounts of lean meat, fish, and a variety of veggies and fruits, whole grain breads and cereals. Avoid simple carbs and white foods like white bread, sugars, etc. Health Question & Answer

No. Blood pressure is blood pressure. Cholesterol is cholesterol. Two different things.

Your cholesterol might have increased or decreased, or remained the same. Weight loss is generally associated with lower blood cholesterol but is no guarantee of it. There are plenty of lean people out there with very high cholesterol. Get the lipid panel taken during your next fasting blood test and you will be able to tell.

Congratulations on your weight loss, incidentally.Health Question & Answer

Not necessarily. Cholesterol ad blood pressure are 2 different things. Normal cholesterol is under 200, with HDL ("good cholesterol") between 60 and 80 mg/L and LDL ("bad cholesterol") under 100.

Cholesterol affects blood pressure by creating fat layers in your arteries. So, there is an indirect connection between cholesterol and blood pressure but there are not the same thing.Health Question & Answer

Probably - have it tested, though. Some people just have a hard time with cholesterol, but it's a genetic problem.Health Question & Answer

that is a possibility. you will have to check with your doctor so that they can run a cholesterol panel on you.Health Question & Answer

If it's been re-tested and your doctor or someone in his office told you that, than yes.Health Question & Answer

not necessarily, but i hope so

you will need your doctor do a blood testHealth Question & Answer
