Health Question & Answer

Answers:
The "fuss" with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids essentially rides on the back of fish oil, which is largely EPA and DHA (both omega-3). Omega-3 AND omega-6 fatty acids are found in vegetable oils and grains, with the exception of DHA which is largely richer in fish. The supplement industry and the fishermen would LOVE you to buy their supplements because obviously, it makes them money. What they haven't told you is that the body of evidence showing "benefits" with these fish oils is still not strong for either side. Harvard has interpreted them to be beneficial, but on the other side the Institute of Medicine (the advisory group for Congress, also a prestigious organization) has concluded the exact opposite. Marion Nestle, a nutrition professor at NYU, and a top expert in the field, probably sums it up the most eloquently, here: .?id=eating-made-simple" rel="nofollow">http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm.?id=eati...

Keep in mind that not all research is good. Much of the studies on fish oil are funded by supplement companies or companies with interests in fishing. You should also know that there are some side effects to abuse of fish oil, including decreased blood clotting time and suppressed immunity. Would I buy fish oil.? No. I would just eat fish, because there are tons of benefits to fish besides the fats - large quantities of selenium, iodine, vitamin D and calcium, as well as being a source for lean, biologically complete protein.

I don't believe buying baby formula with omega-3 does anything because ideally, mothers should be breastfeeding their babies, not feeding them formula. There are some omega-3s in breastmilk, but that doesn't automatically mean that the formula is in some way superior - if you ask me, it is a marketing gimmick. Much of the fuss about omega-3s is largely marketing and pseudoscience. There is much promise in these oils, but keep in mind that every decade seems to have its "magic substance" that is wildly popular before being cast aside. Ten years ago, it was bran. For a while, everything had bran in it...people couldn't get enough of it. Then, we abandoned bran for fish oil. What will be the next fad.?Health Question & Answer

in mg about 3000-9000 is good.

DHA and EPA are derivatives of Omega 3 fats(ALA), that is Omega 3s are broken down by the body into DHA and EPA

the difference b/w omega 6 and 3s is that 6s are found in oils such as sunflower, safflower, evening primrose, and 3s are found in fatty fish i.e. salmon, swordfish, herringHealth Question & Answer

Omega Fatty Acid is just a healthy fat. It is found in fish and nuts and other foods.

It's good for you to take a omega fatty acid pill daily because it is good for cholesterol, heart health, and your joints. Think of it as healthy fat that your body needs daily.
DHA and EpA are two subtypes of healthy fat that are both essential in your diet. BUy some fish oil pills and take it as directed on the bottle there are no risks. (you will not get fat)

I think everyone should take them, I take them and a multivitamin everyday that's all i need for supplementsHealth Question & Answer

they are all good fats in the form of simple acids...just a small amount of them in your daily diet will stabilize metabolism, help guard joints, bones, muscles and nerves, as well as help body get rid of trans fat and toxins...Health Question & Answer
