I feel like I'm addicted to sugar?!

Question: I feel like I'm addicted to sugar.?
I am overweight. I have a significant thyroid problem so losing weight is somewhat difficult. I am also a stay at home mom of a 2 yr old and a 10 week old. I feel like if I can control my sugar intake, that'll solve most of my weight problem. The thing is, I want it all the time. If I don't have it during the meal, I want dessert. Sweet snacks too. I need to get myself in check for my own health, and the future health of my kids. If I cut out sugar cold turkey, is that the best route.? If yes, should I cut out natural sugars too.? Like fruits.? Please give me some good, practical advice. Thank you.Health Question & Answer

You do indeed have a physical addiction to sugar. It is very common, but can lead to real health problems like diabetes if you don't control it. My mom has this problem and the only solution is to stop buying sweets - I know its hard but you have to replace them with good foods. Fruits are fine to eat, but when it comes to refined sugars and starches these are some of the worst foods that people get addicted to all the time. So you will have to slowly ween yourself off the sweets - I had to do this for my addiction to pasta - eventually when you eat things like nuts, fruits and fulfilling lean healthy foods you don't have much of a craving anymore. But the minute you pick up a piece of candy or cookie, you will easily become addicted again so you have to avoid them as much as possible.

also make sure your diet is balanced because it is a sign of a nutritional deficiency or disease that causes nutrition deficiency.

Try using vinaigrette as a dressing on salads or vegetables. The vinegar cuts your cravings for sweets.Health Question & Answer

Check with your doctor before you do anything with your diet. An overall suggestion is to switch to more fruits and see if you can satisfy your sugar cravings that way. Most people don't eat enough fruit and it's one of those tasty foods that you can eat guilt free. Eat whole fruits, not juices - so you can feel satisfied from the bulk of the fruit and avoid canned fruit unless you are sure that no sugary syrups have been added.

Now is a good time to set an example of good eating habits for your child. If you eat well, your children will pick up on it and have good eating habits as adults.Health Question & Answer
