It takes a lot a very hard work over a long period of time to improve your mile time. If you run for a high school you should ask your coach. Training is a lot more complicated than me just typing in a training resume in this response.

Training is highly personalized for you in particular, and what you are willing to do and/or capable of doing.

What you generally need to do:

Pre-season: Get strong with lots of push-ups, sit-ups, and strength stuff stuff. You need a LOT of base mileage (45 + miles a week, 60-70 if you are really serious). You can also do stair workouts, hill workouts, and a lot of other stuff.

Mid-Season: You need to keep up your miles, and mild core strengthening. The most important workouts you need to do are speed workouts. This includes tempo runs, shorter repetitions that add up to more than a mile, but at a faster pace, fartlek, and a whole bunch of other things.

This also depends on how old you are (junior high, high school, college) Ask a track coach for more stuff. It's pretty hard to train on your own.Health Question & Answer

Practice, practice, practice, forcing yourself to go a little further than you are comfortable with each time.

also, make sure you're running no longer than a mile. If on a track, run on the inner edge of your lane, right up next to the line.Health Question & Answer
