I'm a personal trainer so I'll give you a qualified answer. Yes weight lifting can help burn calories and fat. The more muscle you have the more calories your body burns but you also have to eat a well balanced diet and eat a little bit less than your body is burning.

I would suggest you figure out how many calories your body needs to lose fat. There are many websites out there. Just do a search for caloric expenditure.

I would stick with heavy weights and total body workouts since they both use up more energy and more calories.

High reps is only good for muscular endurance and doesn't use as much energy as heavy weights. It's a big myth that high reps burn more fat.

I would also do some type of cardio 3 to 5 times a week and even substitute 2 or 3 of the cardio workouts with high intensity interval training.

There is an article on my blog about high intensity interval training. You can check it out at :

Hope that helps.Health Question & Answer

Doing exercise, whether that is lifting weights or not, will help you to lose fat. The key to losing fat is keeping your heartrate higher then normal for a set period of time, and there is no reason weightlifting cannot do this. (about 45 minutes at about 150% resting heart rate)

The key thing that you have to watch however is your diet. Weightlifters don't lose much fat because they eat so much. there is no reason why you cannot build muscle and lose weight at the same time. Just cut your fat intake, and raise your protein intake. If you are training with both weights and jogging, you will be able to both build muscle and lose fat.

And please don't say no women, there is women on here that are twice as strong and healthy as you are, and there is no need to discriminate them because they are women.

Good luck :)Health Question & Answer

As long as you eat clean, lifting weights will help you lose fat. When i first starting lifting, i was getting leaner even though I was eating more. Now of course, if you're eating a lot of fries and hamburgers and fatty/sugary foods in general, you'll still build muscle but you're not going to be losing any fat. The best solution would be to lift weights, and then on your off days, do some cardio work.Health Question & Answer

no no no...you definately need to do your strength training first...then do your cardio. doing weights first burns the glycogen in your body as fuel (your body always uses this first)...after weights, hit up some cardio and because your glycogen will be low, your body will turn to fat as fuel.

but dont forget to train properly. do high reps, 15-20, and do them slowly. this helps burn more calories. and if you can, try and do about 3 bodyparts per workout. or even curcuit training. and protein before cardio of course.Health Question & Answer

Both really. More muscle means that you'll burn more calories when you're doing nothing, but jogging burns them "now". A good way to start is to alternate what you do each day. Later on, after you've developed it into a habit, you can begin altering your workout with other methods.Health Question & Answer
