Question: Will Lifting Weights Stunt My Growth.?
Hi im a 14 year old male and have been lifting dumbell weights for about 3 or 4 months...I am currently lifting 9kg weights and I want to know if it can stunt my growth...Im 6 foot by the way.Health Question & Answer

Hey Ryan - It's a total myth. Check out the likes of some of the really huge strength guys competing today and you'll see a lot of them are well over 6 feet tall and have been training hard since at least your age.

The only thing to watch for is that you learn perfect form. As your body is still changing, many of your adjoining tendons, muscles, and growth plates will not yet be as strong as they will be in a few years. This means that if you lift heavy with bad form you are increasing your chances of injury.

Anyhow, if you learn good form now your training throughout your life will be so much more effective.

The myth itself probably started because of medical research showing that the use of anabolic steroids in younger people can reduce overall final adult height. The increased levels of testosterone, and subsequent drop off when the test was no longer being taken, triggers the body to assume that it has finished puberty and growing. Growth plates fuse just as they will for you at 22 or 23 naturally, and once that's happened there is no way you can grow taller.

This is one of the main reasons that nobody under 25 or or so should even consider using steroids for muscle growth unless required to do so under strict medical supervision.Health Question & Answer
