I'm on a gluten free diet, and I eat healthy constantly. Why am I still experiencing constipation?!

Question: I'm on a gluten free diet, and I eat healthy constantly. Why am I still experiencing constipation.?
First let me know that I did not go gluten free to relieve constipation. That was to help rid my house of gluten for my celiac husband.

I normally eat rice with steamed veggies for lunch every day. Usually even dinner if I'm not in the mood to cook. It is white rice, and that won't change to brown rice. I had a BAD experience with brown rice once and I can't bring myself to eat it again. Sometimes I eat baked red potatoes with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray, sour cream, 1 slice of American cheese, bacon bits, and Tabasco sauce.

I am currently trying to add more to my diet, as I know it's not enough for a person to run off of in a day. Sometimes I add salads with olive oil based dressings.Health Question & Answer

Get real butter. It is better for you than the fake stuff. You need water, fiber, and fat in order to keep things moving through. I would also switch to real cheese instead of American (which is mostly oil). Increase your fruits and vegetables, veggies should be lightly steamed.Health Question & Answer

You Might Experience Constipation or Diarrhea
If you replace the bread and pasta in your diet with only processed white rice, the low-fiber diet may lead to constipation. Conversely, if fiber-rich grains and beans are added to your diet in large amounts too quickly, you might develop gassiness and diarrhea.Health Question & Answer

It sounds like you nedd to add more variety to your diet. Dark green leafy foods are very goodfor you. You also may be eating too much insoluble fiber. You need soluble fiber to help make you more "regular". Try taking a fiber supliment.Health Question & Answer

You probably need to add more good protein to your diet, such as fish and chicken. You could be experiencing diarrhea because your body is getting rid of toxins or because your diet isn't quite as well-balanced as it should be.Health Question & Answer

how much fat are you eating a day.?
if your fat is low and it sounds like it is you need to pump up your fiber alot ( bacon bits.? now even i know one should not be eating those fake little fat salt chips )
start eating those prunes!Health Question & Answer

When cutting out gluten you need to find an alternative fiber source. Try taking a fiber (bulk forming) fiber supplement, that should clear up any constipation issues.Health Question & Answer

Rice can lead to constipation, as can cheese. Maybe you should cut your rice intake for a while and see what happens. Good luck.Health Question & Answer

The rice and cheese can bind you up. Are you sure you are drinking enough water.? Try increasing your water intake and see if that helps.Health Question & Answer

Maybe because your meals ARE NOT healthy. You need more vegetables, fruits and whole grains every day. also be sure you are drinking plenty of water.Health Question & Answer

Add some raw fruits and veggies to your diet.Health Question & Answer

try adding more fibre to your dietHealth Question & Answer

eat more fibreHealth Question & Answer

okiedokie. You have next to no fibre in your diet. So go to the shop and buy some dried apricots and munch on those since they are packed full of the stuff. They are very tasty and moreish but are also a natural laxative so dont eat too many :)

This on it's own will not completely resolve your issue, you need to incorporate food with high fibre into your diet to allow for "easy passage" :P

if this doesnt help then you might want to see a doctor as i had the same problem once and they give you some treatment that is...lets say...thorough :DHealth Question & Answer

There are many reasons that you may be experiencing this problem.

You could try to add some fiber to your diet in the form of a suplement... But I don' trecomend artificial laxatives... Theya re very harsh and can cause problems in the long term.

How long have you been on this diet.? Your body may be adjusting to the new intake and just hadn't found balance yet.

Unless you start to get abdominal pain or swelling... I would give it a while longer just to see if your body can work things out on it's own... But if you start to feel pain or swelling, go to a doctor.

There are many factors to chronic constapation and if it gets too bad, a blockage may need to be treated by a doctor.Health Question & Answer

You may have to be adding wheat to your diet to make you regular. Your body is not the same as your husband's. I'm celiac, my husband is not. I substitute foods or he does. So when we have soup, I have potato with it, he has bread. Your body needs it to be regular, his body reacts to these products. Its as simple as adding soy sauce to your steamed vegies - that has gluten in it.Health Question & Answer
