lean proteins (at least 1-1.5 g per lb of bodyweight per day), salmon, lean beef, nuts and legumes and plenty of vegetables. Work out 3-4 days per week, don't drink any sodapop, get plenty of rest and drink that water, and results should be optimal.Health Question & Answer

My boyfriend is a pro at this, and I cook for him, so I'll try to fill you in. You're not just looking for protein to build muscle, but you're also looking to minimize your caloric intake. Thus... read your labels.

Look for things with a really good protein-to-calorie ratio. In other words, the fewer calories per gram of protein, the better.

Chicken and steak have good ratios, true, but there are a lot of non-meat products that have shockingly good (and often better) protein-to-calorie ratios. Try tofu if you can; there are some good recipes out there, I swear. And most tofu has a better protein-to-calorie ratio than beef or chicken. My boyfriend is by no means a vegetarian, but if you cook the stuff right, it's great. You can also put silken tofu (as opposed to the harder, traditionally cubed tofu) into a lot of foods--shakes, yogurt, sauces, etc. Be creative! Last week I made him manicotti with a ricotta/tofu mixture... it was really good. If you're not down with tofu, there are some great products that taste similar to meat (Boca, Morningstar Farms) that have more protein and less fat than animal products.

Eggs are also good, though watch the yolks--they're really high in cholesterol. I have another tofu-based recommendation here (I am realizing now that I do a lot of protein-themed cooking...) that's really fantastic. Make scrambled eggs, but while they're still cooking, add a bunch of mashed up firm (not extra firm) tofu. Firm tofu, mashed, has the exact same consistency as the scrambled egg, and picks up the flavors of the dish--I swear, you won't know you're eating tofu. Keep cooking until the eggs are done, but along the way add some spices and cheese (feta and spinach are great in this, and mushrooms are another good addition since they're high in protein and very low in fat). Better texture than scrambled eggs alone, better for you, and a better protein-to-calorie ratio. Win-win-win.

Just remember that the key is maximizing protein while minimizing calories; and often, we forget that animal products just naturally have a lot of fat.

There are also different types of protein you should look for. Specifically, whey protein is ideal for muscle building. Drink protein shakes and look for high-protein bars that are low in calories. My boyfriend also swears by CEE--Creatine Ethyl Ester--which helps with both muscle building and muscle recovery.

Best of luck!Health Question & Answer
