If poison is swallowed, what is the first step of care?!
Question: If poison is swallowed, what is the first step of care.?
Answers:
First- Ensure that the scene is SAFE! If it's-
- SAFE then Proceed as below
- NOT safe then retreat and call 911
Identify the substance IF possible, but don't delay getting help to do so. After you call for help you can keep trying to ID it. If you are able to ID it- depending on what it is, how much they took, & and the person's symptoms: call poison control or 911-
- adult took an extra dose of medication without any symptoms-> call the doctor or poison control
- child swallowed several unknown tablets and is lethargic-> call 911
- child took a dose of a close age sibling's medication by mistake without any symptoms-> call the doctor or poison control
- adult took an entire bottle of medication-> call 911
- adult or child swallowed an unknown substance-> call 911
If at ANY time you are UNSURE about the situation or the substance is UNKNOWN- presume it's dangerous and call 911, it's always better to err on the side of caution.
Note to some of the posters above: inducing vomiting is now reserved for a few specific situations. The current standard of care is "Activated Charcol". also do NOT give "Tons" of water as "Missy - " suggests without advice from a medical proffesional.
